Windows 10: Update Fails Windows and Defender

Since yesterday i keep getting this error.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Norton and a Windows Defender that will not switch off

I have installed Norton Security but still get Windows defender updates that fail. Windows Defender says the PC is not being monitored because the apps service has stopped. I initially installed Norton with Defender running and got the failed updates
message. I then removed Norton, switched off Defender and reinstalled Norton and still get the failed updates.

 

windows defender is not updating

while updating windows defender everytime it fails to download update.and it doesnot show any error code.just shows "windows defender failed to update".

In the past I had Defender not update a couple times. I solved it by d/l ing the definitions manually & installing them. In both instances after doing this, my updates started working again.

You may also wish to run a SFC to see if anything need repaired.

FIX: I was able to fix this by opening CMD as Admin and typing (with quotes):


"%PROGRAMFILES%\Windows Defender\MPCMDRUN.exe" -RemoveDefinitions -All


Then I typed (with quotes:


"%PROGRAMFILES%\Windows Defender\MPCMDRUN.exe" -SignatureUpdate

The update still showed in Windows Update but hitting retry cleared it.

 

I have posted the fix on many Microsoft forums but all have been deleted. Why would they delete the fix ?

Worrying

 

I had this problem on a Win 10 Home based computer. Cannot disable Defender.

Deleted all files in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download, and retried update, but the problem were still there. Clicked on Try Again, and Voila!

 

you could try either restarting Security Service in Services
or
Download the Definitions direct from MS here:

it says follow on screen prompts when running the Exe after download, but in my experience it updates silently.
