Update From 1909 to 2004 Questions

This morning I took the plunge and updated from 1909 to 2004. Did this via a USB stick with the Windows 2004 install ISO. Everything went well (although I had made an additional Macrium Reflect image of the 1909 install . . . just in case).

So, I have a few questions. I've been using "Sledgehammer" for quite a while now, just to maintain some semblance of control of my now five year old Dell laptop. Prior to updating 1909 I started Sledgehammer, allowed WuMgr to run and took a snapshot of the updates that I had "hidden."

After the update to 2004 I ran Sledgehammer again, allowed WuMgr to run and took a snapshot of the available updates. As this was the first time running WuMgr after the update to 2004, none of the updates were hidden.

Two things surprised me. One, all the driver updates that now showed up after the update to 2004, and two, the fact that neither KB5001567 nor KB5000802 which it replaced showed up. Could these updates have been incorporated into the update when the progress window says "Looking for updates before installing . . ." or words to that effect during the update?

Also, while still on 1909 I went through the whole "Removal of Flash Player" updates, and yet, here I am on 2004 and that update shows up again.

I can see why the Windows base (that doesn't frequent this forum) would be confused. I think of myself as a reasonably competent Windows user . . . and I'm confused.

    :)

    1909 vs 2004

I thought (maybe) or suggested (possibly) this seemed to be true immediately with 2004, but after being with it for a few days I do find & feel 2004 superior to 1909. No, this isn't from fancy lab set ups & testing
or Swiss stop-watches... nothing but, plain ole everyday use.

2004, same hardware, same software, definitely is faster, snappier, more responsive & more fluid than 1909 (was).

    Cheers,

    Drew

User.000 issue after updating to 1909

I'm one of the many people suffering from issues with user profiles after applying Update 1909 to Windows 10. I've read all the threads I can find on the topic here and have followed the suggestions, all to no avail. Any other thoughts are appreciated.

After applying Update 1909, the ProfileImagePath was changed to c:\users\User.000
One file that was always in use and couldn't be removed was left in c:\users\User (can't recall or find the exact file now), so I could never rename or remove the c:\user\User directory.

I followed the multiple suggestions from Brink and others:
    • Rebooted at least 6 times
    • Enabled hidden Administrator
    • Booted into Safe Mode
    • Changed ProfileImagePath
    • Tried to rename c:\users\User but couldn't because a file was still in use
    • Copied all data from c:\users\User.000 into c:\users\User
    • Rebooted and had temporary profile
    • Followed steps in Brink tutorial to change ImageProfilePath; rebooted with no change
    • Restored using Restore Point from before Update 1909 - returned to single profile state (User.000)
    • Removed each update that was installed individually and rebooted after each update removal - profile state never changed
    • After all updates were removed, repeated the steps above with hidden Administrator, changing profile, etc. - same issue with file in use in c:\users\User
    • Followed all steps above with hidden Administrator but without copying files from User.000 to User - same results

    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

    1909 to 2004 upgrade

The 20H2 iso is available for download (see News section), so that naturally 'includes' 2004. This is a step preceding 20H2 becoming available by Windows Update in place of 2004; presently you'd be offered 2004 by WU then the 20H2 enablement package. All downloads are available following the relevant article in the News section.

It's an evolving scenario following the pattern of 1903/1909.
