how to turn off automatic updates

    Billion,

The list below is all the updates installed last night at the time Outlook 2010 went into Safe Mode. I have run an Office repair and stopped all addons plus run sfc /scannow, all without any change. A restore point was created during these updates, @ 23.20gmt
on 8/12/15 for Office 2010 so will be trying that later after I get some work done.

Your guess is better than mine regarding which Update is the likely culprit.

Security Update for Microsoft Word 2010 (KB3101532) 32-Bit Edition

Security Update for Microsoft Silverlight (KB3106614)

Update for Microsoft Outlook 2010 (KB2760779) 32-Bit Edition

Cumulative Update for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems

    Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool for Windows 8, 8.1, 10 and Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2 x64 Edition - December 2015 (KB890830)

Update for Microsoft Outlook 2010 (KB3114409) 32-Bit Edition

Security Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB3085528) 32-Bit Edition

Security Update for Internet Explorer Flash Player for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB3119147)

Definition Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB3114412) 32-Bit Edition

Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB3114399) 32-Bit Edition

Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB3114404) 32-Bit Edition

Security Update for Microsoft Excel 2010 (KB3114415) 32-Bit Edition

Why the **** can the updates only be copied singly, and fussy at that, and not in block?

Update KB3114409 Withdrawn due to Outlook 2010 Problems

I just uninstalled KB3114409. If MS withdrew it, does that mean it will not reinstall itself automatically? (I don't know how to "hide" an update to avoid that.)

  7. I got my fingers burned by this poisonous update albeit on my older Windows 7 machine. Luckily my 10 has office 365. I think it's a total disgrace that MS clearly fail to test what they shunt down the pipe. And to then take 12 hours to pull the update defies logic. It's almost as if the guys at MS don't actually use their own products and realise the carnage they cause. Apple are just as bad pushing major bugs out. What are these software juggernauts doing? You probably find all the major MS guys have Linux on their personal computers, and the big wigs at Apple only use Android phones. I'm just amazed things get put out with such glaring bugs and clearly untested or they know about the bugs but just choose to flagrantly release anyway. This is all part of why I find aggressive updates so frustrating and stressful. Valuable hardware costing a lot of hard earned money at the mercy of MS and the Russian roulette of their software updates. if it ain't broke then don't go fixing it should be a mantra MS adopts!
