    Update KB3199209 for Windows 10 version 1607

    Hi there
We should only really ever have to re-boot for mega release changes / kernel patches.

While I know W10 isn't designed as a fully blown server - a lot of people DO run things like Virtual Machines on them and especially all sorts of media servers such as PLEX.

Running these things makes re-starting quite a nuisance --even if Windows now has "Outside Hours" option. Re-starting VM's can be a bit of a pain also --remember people can logon to your VM's even if they don't have an account on the HOST PC so you could for example have a multi-user SERVER Linux VM on your windows Host.

If you set up a VPN (such as OpenVPN server) restart can be a nuisance too.

A lot more people keep (or want to keep) computers running almost indefinitely. I'd like it so the only time I need to re-boot would be either for a complete OS / kernel upgrade or changing some hardware which means powering off the machine. A lot of HDD's / SSD's BTW can be "Hot swapped" so changing HDD's doesn't always mean powering off either.

    Cheers
    jimbo

Yours is the first report of a restart required. Maybe you also received other updates that would require a restart. Check your update history to see what else, if anything, was installed at the same time. Just a thought.

To get the stand-alone package for this update, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website.
    Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for installing this update.

    Restart information

I have seen two machines with different problems after this update. Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc?

One user lost some desktop icons and apps from the start menu (All Apps).

Another is now being prompted for username and password every time she tries to save a sharepoint document

  9. You have misunderstood. It is Microsoft that says a restart is required.
Link you provided says this, but not true:
    Restart information
You have to restart the computer after you apply this update.

BTW, MS changed this from when I read it a couple days ago. They dropped the "...do not...".

I cannot uninstall KB3199209 - I tried many ways.. But no avail...

So I uninstalled two other updates, one KB and one Flash update - both I think were security updates.

    KB3176936 cannot (also) be uninstalled.

Well after uninstalling and reverting few other things I finally got to login to desktop! BUT: Start menu is not working and File Explorer is very slow and shell crashes easily. Windows Store apps are missing from Taskbar...

I would so dislike to reset/clean install Windows 10... I hope there is a way!
