    Update KB5048685 failed and Windows Explorer no longer works


    I followed the usual 'update and shut down' procedure for the most recent update. When I returned to my computer it hadn't shut down and showed a screen with F2 / F12 options. I got stuck in various loops and have tried different fixes on this community. However nothing has helped. I have now reached a point where I can log on to the laptop and see the desktop screen, but have no taskbar and cannot open windows explorer via the task manager either. This means I cannot follow other suggestions for similar issues eg deleting failed download files from SoftwareDownload folder.
