Windows 10: Update leads to infinite load screen despite repairs and complete format and re-install

Any advice appreciated. PC specs - Intel core i5 4670K / mobo ASRock Z97 Pro4 / Memory Crucial Ballistix Tracer 8Gb / GPU GeForce 2070 Super / PSU 650W Corsair / Hard drive WD SSD 1 Tb. PC used for email / YouTube / browsing, gaming mostly offline and recently VR gaming Oculus Quest.


A few months ago following a new Windows update, I restarted and only got an infinite load screen. Eventually had to repair on startup to roll back the update, then PC worked fine. Within a few days the update was once again downloaded automatically, and a restart triggered the infinite load screen again. This happened a few times.


Cut forward and I have eventually formatted both my hard drives and done a complete re-install from scratch of Windows 10 on a brand new Western Digital 1Tb SSD, twice. After a day or two Windows will download the latest update and inform me I need to restart. By delaying my update and only sleeping the PC rather than powering down, I can extend the time it works flawlessly. As soon as I restart to apply the update, I get the infinite load screen.


Windows update details:

"2020-03 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 ver 1909 for x64-based systems KB4551762"

"2020-02 Security Update for Adobe Flash Player for Windows 10 ver 1909 for x64-based systems KB4537759"

"2020-02 Cumulative Update for .NET framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Windows 10 ver 1909 for x64 KB4534132"

All successfully installed, pending restart. Once I restart - infinite download screen.


What am I doing wrong?

The tutorials provided are just a list of troubleshooting steps. Use only the steps which apply to you.

Since none of the troubleshooting steps here worked, I'd suggest you do a Clean install.

Hi dalchina. Good news, I followed your suggestion and reinstalled the update and now it appears as "installed correctly" *Biggrin Maybe it was not necessary to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter or maybe if necessary. But using it I do not think it could have worsened something. The installation was very fast, unlike the first time it showed step 1 and step 2 completed.

Thank you john for all of your help i decided to get the usb my computer came with and factory reset it i didnt have anything that personal or valueable so its ok thanks for the help though i appreciate it
