  1. Update: "This computer can not join/create homegroup"

I've tried trouble shooters for homegroup and network
    I've tried enable ipv6
I've tried making sure all necessary tasks are "running" in the services section of the network and sharing center
I've tried making sure all my advanced homegroup settings were correct.
I've tried disabling all homegroups on all other pcs
I've tried finding the idstore.sst file to delete it (which doesn't exist on win10?) <<<fixed
I've tried updating all network drivers.
I've tried from a wireless network and hardlined
all other computers can create and use homegroups other than my main pc.

I also can not share folders, access is restricted somehow.

UPDATE: both Peer Name Resolution Protocol (can't access key) and Peer Networking Grouping fail to start , I edited the log on info to all be the same (using methods described in link below) when I edited the info for Peer Networking Identity Manager it did inform me of saved changes, the only one to do so. PNIM is the only one of the three working.

Some found this useful, hope you do to!
Peer networking grouping service isnt running is the message. How - Microsoft Community

this seems to be a Microsoft issue and I hope dearly for a fix soon. a shame it happened to my main pc and none of the other side ones in my house.

UPDATE: I am trying to use Process Monitor to see which Key it can't access but I'm not entirely sure on what I'm looking for
found this which told me what to do but not what I'm looking for
Cant start the Peer Name Resolution Protocol service

FINAL UPDATE!!!!! the final solution in the link below fixed my homegroup. it still saw an old homegroup from a secondary pc that didn't exist. but I just recreated the same homegroup on the secondary pc and viloa! I really hope we compiled most of the answers to homegrouping issues here. perhaps make this thread sticky??

  2. Computer can't leave homegroup after W10 upgrade. Thinks it isn't in it.

When that happened to me I just used the other computer to create a Homegroup with the same password. It doesn't seem to matter which one creates the password. Then you can join the Homegroup because you already know the password.

    Good luck

You've done a lot of things!

Presumably you have an OK IP no. Can you ping to any other comp and can others ping you.

Have you got any third party AV or Firewalls installed?

Have you tried disabling the firewall?

  5. Only Windows Defender. pings go threw just fine. and after your post I tried disabling firewall and defender. no luck

  6. My pc also, sometimes, only gives me the option to join a homegroup even though there isn't one created

I've also tried deleting everything in disk cleanup, incluing all old versions of windows.

Couple of other questions. What is the history of this comp? Upgraded from earlier OS versions or new install?

You say shares don't work. Is this both ways?

What is the actual error message when you try sharing?

Not sure that the request to join a non existent Homegroup is relevant as I had that for a while but seems to have got the message now!

Update: "This computer can not join/create homegroup"

I don't think you can do anything about this. Windows 8 could not talk to Windows 7 home groups either. AFAIK, you're out of luck until every PC on your network is running Windows 10.

This is not true. I was able to successfuly join my laptop (Windows 8.1) and desktop (Windows 7) in one Homegroup.

However after upgrading to Windows 10, my laptop can't join/create a Homegroup!

My apologies. I left out a few key words. When Windows 8 first launched, Windows 7 and Windows 8 homegroups could not talk to each other. That was fixed later, so hopefully we'll have a solution in the near future.

  11. I upgraded my Windows 7 desktop and Windows 8.1 laptop to 10, I had a Homegroup working.

Windows 10 told me that "homegroup is available." I attempted to join and enter the password. After a while I got a dialog box which stated "Windows no longer detects a HomeGroup on this network. To create a new HomeGroup, click OK and then open HomeGroup in control panel"
Going to control panel only gave me the option to join an existing home group. There was no option to either delete this group or create a new one.
The troubleshooter has not provided a solution.

I found this in Windows help:-

"The Peer Networking Grouping and HomeGroup Provider services must both be running. Here's how to check this:

    • Open Control Panel by swiping in from the right edge of the screen, tapping Search (or if you're using a mouse, pointing to the upper-right corner of the screen, moving the mouse pointer down, and then clickingSearch), entering Control Panel in the search box, and then tapping or clicking Control Panel.
    • Enter Administrative Tools in the Control Panel search box, then double-tap or double-click Services.
Update: "This computer can not join/create homegroup" [IMG]
You might be asked for an admin password or to confirm your choice. .
In the Status column, next to the Peer Networking Grouping andHomeGroup Provider services, you should see the word Running. If you can't see this, double-tap or double-click the name of the service, tap or click Start, then tap or click OK."

I checked this on both computers and both were ok, however I noticed that on my desktop HomeGroup Listener was not running so I changed that and lo and behold I was then able to create a new Homegroup (new password generated) and everything is now fine.

I had this problem and this worked for me:

Modify IPv6 registry key to enable IPV6
    ==========================
    a. Click Start, type regedit in Search Bar, and then click regedit in the Programs list.

Note: If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.

    b. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\TCPIP6\Parameters

    c. Check whether the "DisabledComponents" registry key exists. If so, let's move on the next steps.

    d. Double click the "DisabledComponents" registry key and modify the value to 0.

(If the key doesn't exist, please create the key above and assign the value 0)

    e. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

    ======================
Did you reset both? Looks like you have reset both - modem and router.
After reset the router, the router's password changed to the default "admin".
If earlier you had your own password for the router, did you change it back to your earlier Password?
(Or you have been using the default password for your router all along?)

After many tries and changed so many settings, my Win 10 computer still could not see the Win XP computer - but Win 10 computer became very painfully slow, not usable anymore.

So, I had to do another clean install. After the clean install, I decided to join the HomeGroup first before doing anything else.. Interestingly enough, the Win 10 computer can now see the Win XP computer - can access Win XP computer's file and use its attached printer.

    Problem solved.

*** Update: My Win 10 computer can see/access Win XP computer, but not the other way around. But that's OK, since I mainly use the Win 10 - it is nice to be able to access some old files on XP when needed. No need for the XP to be able to access files on Win 10 anyway.
