I am downloading now, is at 61 %, about 1% a minute. I am writing this is my W7, You said, "It normally will not take anywhere near that long to update°, you mean, the update after downloading should be around a hour and a half.

The download time will depend on your bandwidth, but yeah it can sometimes take around an hour or so for the actual update to install and completely finish.

Update to Latest Version of Windows 10 using Update Assistant

Brink........I survived. All looks well so far, I see a lot of settings changed by the update, including the restoring of Windows photo viewer. The system seems stable (15063.483).

    Regards

It took 3 and a half hours for me from start to end. But worth it. I am very glad I got this update out of the way..

    it works on "normal installation"

I have a second installation in a virtual disk (VHDX) with native boot
It does not accept to upgrade the VHD native boot to 1703
Does anyone have a solution ?

    Hello Daniel, *Smile

I suppose you could see if you may be able to import the VHDX in Hyper-V as a VM, and upgrade it in the VM if able.

as my VHDX contains all physical drivers (native boot..), i need to remove them and install virtual driver and create a new virtual machine.
The import function of Hyper-V do not work as there is no Hyper-V config file.

I have also tried to run setup.exe (of w10 1703) and I got this message
setup do not accept to run on a VHD native boot machine

You are over-complicating it. Simply create a new virtual machine, and select the existing vhdx file as the hard drive. It sorts out all the drivers automatically. Then update it. and then boot from it in the host. I do this all the time.

thanks Cereberus and Brink, it works as you describe
I thought it was impossible to use an hyper-v w10 installed VHD and run this VHD as a native boot
I have learn something today, thank you again

You can use a VHD or VHDX file from a Hyper-V virtual machine in native boot (notice: all checkpoints must be deleted first!), and you can use a native boot VHD or VHDX file as existing VHD when creating a new VM.

You cannot in any circumstances upgrade a native boot VHS. It simply is impossible:

To upgrade a native boot VHD:

    • Create a new VM selecting "Use an existing virtual hard disk"
    • When VM has been booted to desktop, upgrade it
    • Close / shut down the VM
    • You can now boot to upgraded VHD / VHDX natively and delete VM
Notice that the recommended way is not to connect this temporary VM to a virtual switch, not allowing network / Internet connection. Because VHD has been booted natively, Windows on it contains all hardware information and drivers for the host machine. This might cause Windows Update issues when VHD is used on a VM; VM does not recognize the real host hardware and drivers which Windows Update tries to update, but as devices do not exist on VM, WU fails.

The recommended method to upgrade is to get upgrade media as ISO, not connect VM to network and simply upgrade using the ISO, completely forgetting and bypassing Windows Update.

If for some reason Windows Update needs to be used on the temporary VM, be sure to hide all hardware drivers WU tries to update, then unhide them when VHD is again booted natively on host.
