    Why do they do this?

I recently did the update of my W10x64 pro to version 1511 build 10586, and now I am discovering all kinds of annoying changes of my settings. In no particular order:
    * Caps Lock disable entry in registry was removed
    * Default keyboard was set to English which had me stumped for a long time why I could not log in
    * Default app for *.pdf-files was changed to Edge (was Chrome)
    * Default app for *.txt-files was changed to Notepad (was Textpad)
    * My disabled broken touch pad was enabled, which wrought havoc on my system until I understood what the problem was
    * The custom windows theme I used was discarded and a standard one put in its place
    * The lock screen was changed

And I bet that have as yet not discovered all of the annoying changes. Why do they have to do this...? I like my settings fine the way they were, I manually set them like that for a reason.

    :)

How do I know if I am getting the latest update for Win 10

Thanks for such a prompt reply. But unfortunately, it seems that the response does not in any way respond to my question. So perhaps, I´m still not being clear with my question. Yesterday, 5 Feb. 2016, I updated my computer to version 1511 Build 10586. This
was updated from build 10240. Now, logic would dictate that 10586 comes after 10240, so therefore, it would follow that 10586 is the newer version.

The question comes from the fact that when I did a simple google search, there were people posting comments about version 1511 Build 10586 in November 2015. Now, I know, without a doubt that I received build 10240 AFTER November 2015. So, my question once
    again is:

If version 1511 Build 10586 is "the latest and most up to date," why is Win 10 computer, which has been set to auto update since purchase, receiving this "latest and greatest" update 4 months after most other people did? Was there a version 1511 Build 10586
pushed out in November of 2015 that I did not receive? Are there TWO version 1511 Build 10586 updates?

This is the entire point of my question. If it was new in Nov. 2015, then it´s not new today, which causes me to question how I know--without a doubt--that the "new" version pushed to my computer, is, in fact, the "newEST" version?

Thanks again. I am not trying to be sarcastic or difficult. I simply want a straight answer to my question.

Update to version 1511 build 10586 changed lots of settings...

Hi, well noted. Didn't you know MS likes to annoy and confuse its users by making random changes? *Biggrin
At least, that's what they have a good history of doing.. (removal of email client, Win 7, removal of Aero etc in Win 8, + atrocious start menus or none in Win 8, 10 (my experience with standard start menus in folders and subfolders etc).

    So..
2 - my keyboard is UK English- no change noted
3 - oddly, my pdf association with Sumatra wasn't changed.
4 yes, Edge seems to be set to default after the upgrade. Happened to me.
6 I've not noted anyone commenting on the theme changing, but this upgrade/update is in the manner of a new Windows installation, so possibly...
7 this is a known design change - you may find several different ones appearing.

You'll get the same kind of upgrade to enjoy twice next year from what I've read..

Best to add your comments to Feedback to MS.

  5. I've upgraded three separate machines to the latest Windows 10 revision and didn't notice any of these things changing. Chrome even remained as my default browser.

Yep- it's something I've seen just a very few have reported.. not all. Bear in mind this is a new procedure for MS.

With 10 when a major update comes down it's like restarting the OS from scratch and the settings will go back to as they would be from a fresh instillation. All custom settings will be reset and this is not going to change in the future. All I can suggest is keep a list of what needs to be redone and automate as much as possible.

Update to version 1511 build 10586 changed lots of settings...

with almost every upgrade Edge set it self default ,I just change it back it IE11,and one day that won't bother me as I learn to use it more..and more . and I really don't care what pictures it uses, if I don't like it I will just change it ,so for me I didn't see any major annoying changes

It would be reasonable to think that, but
    a. not all my personally set associations were changed
    b. not everyone seems to experience the same changes (from the very limited comments I've read so far)
    - which suggests MS has made some effort to protect associations....

In the future this is the procedure that's going to occur every time a major change is made to the OS. I would just recommend getting used to it and make plans to redo your adjustments and associations. I have to do the same and it's really not a big deal.

    It might even be useful.
The longer you have an OS image running, the more it is fiddled with and strays from the "optimum" settings for it.
I don't know how often I have had to reset software back to it's default, then set it where I want it(at that point in time) because I have made so many changes.
These upgrade/updates default resets, clean up the WinSxS too, which helps get rid of stability problems, no biggie, reset your settings in 10-15 minutes initially, then as you find them.

    - most of telemetry stuff re-enabled even if some services or tasks were disabled/deleted.
looking back at traffic log from the router, they got it all...
    - automatic windows updates re-enabled even if it still displayed "notify to download"
    - some privacy options re-enabled - more likely all of them were set to express setup then a few were imported back
    - all removed store apps re-installed
    - Avira survived, but did receive an erroneous notification complaining anti-spyware is off - probably because i have it password protected
    - current and other modified themes and explorer customization's survived
    - htm extension reverted to edge, but not html that remained on firefox, all media files remained on mpc-hc, same for 7-zip, actually all manually selected/forced extensions survived
Overall - good job, Big Brother!

For those worried about privacy, I suggest you unplugg your internet before upgrading, re-apply your privacy settings/blocking/whatever, and only then plugg back.

Update to version 1511 build 10586 changed lots of settings...

I try my best not to make tweaks to the registry and automate the changes that I do. Also I have everything set up so when I do set up my own theme I can do it again as simply as possible. It's just a thing we have to understand and know what to expect when updates come down the pipe,

I like to reset stuff up, maybe in a different way. But... Just like Win7 & Win8.1 when the novelty of the new OS wears off, and I have thoroughly explored what I can do with it, and what breaks what, it'll be a last clean install, install software and drivers, run winsat formal, and just let Microsoft take care of Windows, no real theming or changes, just a new wallpaper once in a while. pretty boring but solid as a rock. For experimenting, I'll use a VM and try the latest Debian , Arch, Red Hat, BSD based OS's
