Update to version 1511 build 10586 changed lots of settings...

I did a clean install so missed most of the changes. however

It ignored most of my privacy choices when installing i turned everything but smart screen off during the customised install, only to find everything i had turned off set to 'on' when i checked them !

Advertising has been introduced in the start menu..
Updategate II: Microsoft responds to reports of ads in the Windows 10 Start Menu- The Inquirer
Of course this is 'for our convenience' in other words my start menu really is not MY start menu, though you can at least for now turn off this feature.

Never before have i seen a O.S. with as many third party privacy hacks as Windows 10, and coming from big brand names too for free.

I don't seem able to find anywhere to stop device driver upgrades either the menu i used in the earlier build has changed.. another hack needed perhaps

The context menu shows windows defender, even if you don't use it.

Frankly i don't trust windows 10, makes me thing that privacy settings don't actually do what they say, which is why I have moved over to Linux Mint for my work where confidentiality is important to me and the people i work for. I will continue to use Windows 10 for entertainment and games, but nothing that require that information remains private, Like e-mail, letters, spreadsheets, graphical work etc.

    Nothing wrong with that(my opinion)*Smile.
At least you did, and not like a lot of other users and just say: "I'm thinking about moving to Linux"*Confused(They should just do it already & stop complaining).
I used use Win7 and Ubuntu like that. In my case I found Windows 7 not that stable(too many problems with the Hub controllers) and Ubuntu solid as a rock. But since Win8.1 I have had no problems and moved back to windows, with Ubuntu in a VM.

Hi, there is a tutorial in this forum on disabling specific driver updates.
I have Windows Defender disabled as a consequence of installing Bitdefender, and don't see a Windows Defender context menu option.
    You can
    a. Disable Windows Defender permanently (disabling it by Windows option simply means it returns later!)
    b. Use Shellexview (e.g.) to find and disable most context menu entries you don't want.

Use a start menu that respects the inherited start menu folder structure like Classic Shell. (For me Windows 10 start menu simply trashes my traditional start menu structure, rendering it useless).

Update to version 1511 build 10586 changed lots of settings...

So given the way MS overrides some user set file associations in such an upgrade, I went looking for a way to back these up and restore them.

(I don't want to have to struggle to use my browser, chosen photo program etc after the two big updates in 2016).

A quick look only found this (which I've not tried):
There is a way to make a backup copy of the file associations and restore:

    Backup

    FTYPE> backup_types.txt
    ASSOC> backup_ext.txt Restoration

    FOR / F "tokens =* delims ="% G IN (backup_types.txt) DO FTYPE% G
    FOR / F "tokens =* delims ="% G IN (backup_ext.txt) DO ASSOC% G

(To use the two previous lines in a batch file, replace by%% G% G)

OK, if that works, I could create a bat file out of it... has anyone come across anything more convenient?

  5. Windows sounds turned back on for me. WTH. Why? WHY? I turn on the computer, and Disney's Star Tours blasts out my speakers. I spilled my glass of milk.

Have you tried changing them through Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs instead of the settings app?

Cliff, thanks for the help. That did the trick. I entered one of the default apps and it reset all the other apps. . Guess it needed a little push*Think.

  10. Not one single change occurred here as described in this thread. v10.0.10586.11. If you tweaked your reg then MS probably untweaked it. IMO. My defaults are still the same as previous build numbers.
