Updated to 1803 via Windows Update - now D: OEM partition is showing

I noticed the same thing...only affected 1 of 3 computers though. It immediately annoyed me and MiniTool wasn't able to remove the letter. I was able to quickly do it through DISKPART though (look up how to remove a drive letter with DISKPART) and it worked fine. Partition is still there, as it should be, but doesn't show up in File Explorer. One nice feature of the April Update is that it also doesn't show up under Optimize Drives.

    Hello all,

I've just updated my laptop via Windows Update to 1803 - I suppose I could have waited, but I have working backups stored so I am not that fussed about installing the latest update.

On first boot the system actually feels a lot faster, smoother, just a better experience. Then I got a notification in the Action Centre of low disk space on Drive D: - which would be fine, but I don't have a D: drive.

So I looked in Explorer and sure enough I now have a 450MB D: drive with 45MB left. I looked in Disk Management and it looks like it's the OEM or recovery partition. It never showed before, so can't think why it would now.

This is clearly an issue from installing the 1803 update, but how do I hide the drive again, and also is this likely a deeper problem or nothing to worry about?

    Thanks

In Windows 10 how to reset id of partition 7 to partition 5

I have HP laptop and there were some reserved partition on the system without any name. Using diskpart command I deleted those partitions but now my d drive the oem recovery drive is showing as partition 7 where it should be 5. How can I change it without
formatting or deleting the drive. I don't want the recovery drive to be effected.

    Thank you...

I think you can hide the drive by simply not giving it a drive letter. Right click the D drive in the disk management console and see if you can remove the letter.

You could also I think just delete the partition (so its unallocated), again from the disk management console.

Just delete the drive letter. Leave the partition, It's recovery partition. Same happened with Insiders 17133 build. MS will probably fix the naming with Cumulative update in the next days. Nothing to worry

Thanks for the ultra fast responses to this!

I've had a look at trying to delete the drive letter as you have both suggested, in Disk Management's right click menu. Problem is, when I right click on the D drive, there is no menu like there should be:

  11. As soon as I noticed that the OEM partition shown up in the drive list and had assigned to the drive letter, I immediately unassigned the partition and set the partition's attribute to 'hide' via diskpart. So far, it hasn't been show up on reboots.

This is just the workaround, however, as I'm waiting for Microsoft to fix this minor issue. Yes, I said minor issue, as it was nothing more than an annoyance to some users who notice this.

Same problem here. I get Drive G:

No way to remove it, delete it, etc. None of the workarounds work. I do not like having unnecessary drives show up as I also have lots of other things going on. One mistake in drive letter and it can be disastrous for my data or system integrity.

    So silly...

    I have same issue.
It's a almost first thing you notice after the upgrade.
So I'm wondering if they knew this issue and just ignore it.
Hopefully Microsoft will address this issue.

Use diskpart or minitool partition wizard to remove drive letter.

I have the same issue, but what is also more annoying is the notification pop-ups every few minutes telling me local disk J: is running out of space and to click here to free up space, but it does nothing.
