Windows 10: Updated Windows 10 on laptop which required full wipe. Now, I can't log in using Windows...

First - I know very little about this stuff. Be patient and kind. I can not find an original Windows disc. It came preinstalled when I bought it several years ago and I don't recall getting a disc with it. I had to do a Windows 10 update on my laptop and it said I had to do a full wipe to do this because of a partition or something. So, I copied all my documents, shortcuts, chrome passwords and all images and videos to a portable and did the update. When I went to log in, it said I had the wrong user name or password. I tried the same Windows log in information that I have on this desktop.

I suggest creating a backup image of your os drive

so i have windows 8.1 on the laptop, updated from windows 8.
if i install 10 now can i go back? will it wipe partition C:\ ?
