Windows 10: Updated Windows 10 SDK now available with Visual Studio 15.9.1

At Build 2018, I had the privilege of sharing with you some of the advancements for Microsoft 365 that centered on multi-sense and multi-device experiences. Today, developers can get the latest Windows 10 SDK and start using some of these amazing platform capabilities.

What’s in this update:

Windows UI Library (WinUI) allows you take advantage of the latest Fluent controls and styles for Windows 10 apps without having to wait for all your customers to update to the latest OS version. The WinUI nuget package is backward-compatible, down to Windows 10 version 1607 (Anniversary Update) and includes the same powerful, supported controls that Windows uses in its apps and experiences.

UWP XAML hosting API (Preview) allows ‘islands’ of UWP XAML UI elements to be hosted in applications built using non-UWP technologies such as Windows Forms, WPF, or C/C++ Win32, eliminating the need to re-write or re-package your application for UWP. We’ve created a set of WPF and WinForms wrappers for common UI elements that developers can use to save time.

Adaptive Cards 1.1 boosts feature additions such as Media Element and Action Icons and building cards easier with the new visual designer. Adaptive Cards is available in Outlook as Actionable Messages, in Cortana with Skills, and Teams through Azure Bot Service.

Graph Notifications (Preview) offers an enterprise-compliant, people-centric, and cross-platform notifications platform using Microsoft Graph. The tech preview supports iOS, Android, Windows, and the Graph Explorer.

Project Ink Analysis allows you to write applications that allow users to draw and express themselves and offers the capabilities to understand/recognize and make the ink more productive. This is the same technology we use to power Office today.

Hyper-V allows Android developers on Windows to enjoy a fast Android emulator running the latest Android APIs, all on Hyper-V. The minimum requirements to run this are Windows 10 version 1803 on an x86 based machine and Visual Studio v15.8 for IDE support.

It’s easier to start using the new Windows Machine Learning API, as it’s the same for both Win32 and UWP applications. New capabilities include: support for ONNX v1.2.2 models, converting FP32 datatypes in ONNX models to use FP16, support for Windows Server 2019, and improved evaluation times on the CPU and GPU.

Visual Studio Modeling SDK is now available with Visual Studio 2017

You might want to use the Visual Studio Modeling SDK if you have one of these requirements:

Create Graphical or Form-Based modeling designers. For these, you can use the DSL Tools

Enable transformation of T4 templates part of the build. For these you can use the T4 SDK

Bulk-index assemblies in the Code Index underlying Code Map. For this you can use the Code Index SDK (embedded in the Modeling SDK)

The Modeling SDK changed its name several times during the last ten years: starting from the ‘DSL Tools’ in 2007, it grew to become ‘Visualization and Modeling SDK’ (VSVm SDK) in 2010. At that time, the SDK also contained UML extensibility. Finally, the name was a bit long and therefore it was shorted to ‘Modeling SDK’ in 2012. With previous versions of Visual Studio, regardless of its name, we used to release the Modeling SDK as a separate download.

We are pleased to announce that, from this Visual Studio 2017 RC update, the Visual Studio Modeling SDK will be released as part of Visual Studio itself (in all editions of Visual Studio).

How to install the components of the Modeling SDK?

Previously, the DSL Tools, T4 SDK and Code Index SDK were all shipped as part of the Modeling SDK.

In VS2017, the T4 SDK is installed with the T4 runtime as part of the Text Template Transformation optional component, which is itself installed by default with many Visual Studio workloads

The DSL Tools and Code Index SDK are installed as part of the DSL tools optional component (the component will be renamed to the Modeling SDK in a future Visual Studio RC update, as this is the name under which you have known it for several years). you can find this component in the Visual Studio Extension development workload in every edition of Visual Studio.

Known issues

For the next update of Visual Studio 2017 RC we are slightly improving the experience:

When you use the “Add New Project …” dialog, the DSL Tools project template is currently located under “Other Project Types | Extensibility”. And now, it’s the only one in this category. We are moving it to be under “C# | Extensibility” with the other Visual Studio SDK content, where it makes more sense.

The DSLProjectMigrationTool, (which transforms a DSL Tools solution created for previous versions of Visual Studio, to Visual Studio 2017) will also be added to the release.

DSL Tools are described in detail in the MSDN Library (Modeling SDK for Visual Studio – Domain-Specific Languages). One change is you won’t need to install the Modeling SDK any longer. The DSL Tools Lab is a good resource for beginners.

T4 MSBuild is also described in the MSDN Library (Code Generation in a Build Process - Visual Studio). Again, you can skip the first step as you won’t need to install the Modeling SDK any longer.

Announcing Visual Studio 15 Preview 2

Last month, we released our first preview of the next version of Visual Studio. After listening to your feedback, we have fixed issues and improved experiences in this preview. Download Visual Studio “15” Preview 2 to get the latest. This is still a Preview and is unsupported, so please refrain from installing it on your production environments.

This preview like the previous one, lays groundwork for the next version of Visual Studio. We primarily focused on bug fixes and a few feature updates. New features include; making the account settings dialog more accessible to screen readers, diagnostics improvements to help track down focus related issues, Edit and Continue for XAML apps, and simplified debug configuration in Folder view. Preview 2 also includes the latest Visual Studio Tools for Apache Cordova Update 9 which supports Cordova 6.1.1.

The new light weight installer we introduced in Visual Studio “15” Preview is also available for Visual Studio “15” Preview 2. You can download Preview 2 with the new installer. Remember, this is an early preview so the installer doesn’t yet support all Visual Studio features. So if you want a fuller set of components, please install Visual Studio “15” Preview 2 directly without the lightweight installer. Detailed release notes for the new installer are available at Visual Studio 2017 15.9 Release Notes.

There is one breaking change I want to call out. The change is in how Visual Studio consumes templates and requires that you define templates in template manifest files. This change will not impact anyone in this release, but it is a heads up that templates not defined in template manifest files will stop working in the next Visual Studio “15” release. This change will only impact anyone who authors Visual Studio project templates. You can find out more about this breaking change on MSDN.

Visual Studio Preview (15.6 Preview 5) now available

We are pleased to announce the release of the Visual Studio Preview (15.6 Preview 5). This preview of Visual Studio includes the Preview SDK Build 17095 as an optional component.

Download the Visual Studio 2017 Preview (Pre-release Visual Studio 2017 | Visual Studio Preview - Visual Studio) and give us feedback on the integration and setup experience.

Known Issues

Cannot deploy to a device: When attempting to deploy to a mobile device, it fails with the following error: DEP0001: Unexpected Error: SmartDeviceException – Class not registered [0x80131500]

To work around this issue:

Go to Administrative Command Prompt

Run REGSVR32 “\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\bin\10.0.17095.0\x86\SirepClient.dll”

The following tools are not included with this release:

Filtdump.exe
JSConstraintDebug.exe
Regwindmd.exe
Topedit.exe

What’s New:

C++/WinRT Now Available: The C++/WinRT headers and cppwinrt compiler (cppwinrt.exe) are now included in the Windows SDK. The compiler comes in handy if you need to consume a third-party WinRT component or if you need to author your own WinRT components with C++/WinRT. The easiest way to get working with it after installing the Windows Insider Preview SDK is to start the Visual Studio Developer Command Prompt and run the compiler in that environment. Authoring support is currently experimental and subject to change. Stay tuned as we will publish more detailed instructions on how to use the compiler in the coming week.The ModernCPP blog has a deeper dive into the CppWinRT compiler. Please give us feedback by creating an issue at: Microsoft/cppwinrt.

Accessing New APIs

In order to access the new APIs, you will need to modify the Target Platform Version of your app to be 10.0.17095.0. By default, the Target Platform Version will target the Windows Fall Creators Update version.

When targeting new APIs, consider writing your app to be adaptive in order to run correctly on the widest number of Windows 10 devices. Please see Dynamically detecting features with API contracts (10 by 10) for more information.
