Updates and upgrades with relocated folders

    Hello,

I've been reading in the tutorials how to relocate the user folders and what you need to do in order to upgrade the system. As I have my user and programs folders in another partition (wich I consider is the best way due to the malfunction of windows OSs) some updates and upgrades cannot install. From my point of view I find it quite dissapointing, windows 10 is suppoused to better than older windows, and apparently they do not consider that nowadys hard drives are around GB or TB and a lot of the users move the users and program folder due to security.

So at this point, I wonder if there's another way to say to windows or windows update that my folders are in another partition, like creating a kind of link that redirects windows update where it should. When windows update enters in C to look for users files, could it be posible to redirect it to the correct path (D:\ for example) and avoiding to relocate all the users files again to C.

    Thanks for your attention

    :)

Windows 10...maybe later (not possible to relocate you user profile folder)

    Arthur,

You can relocate the folders within your C:\Users\YourUserName\ folder group instead - Documents, Music, Videos, Pictures, Searches, Favorites, Links.

Windows 10 allows this and the relocations survive subsequent updates.

How to move Users folder and all data to the second drive?

    w3w,

I remember seeing similar reports for Windows 7. There is no sign that MS are going to change things.

Windows does not have any problems with relocating the individual user folders within a C:\Users\Public or C:\Users\YourUserName folder. Windows updates would then proceed correctly.

My SSD is only 120GB and these allowed relocations leave the drive very free.

There is guidance on the relocation procedure in

    .

I would avoid complicating the upgrade to Windows 10 as it can be temperamental at best, even without setting up folder redirects and the like! I'd recommend backing up all your files to a separate storage device anyway, run the upgrade (ensuring Windows 10 activates successfully), then reinstall Windows 10 fresh using a USB/DVD with Windows 10 on it. This should ensure you don't run into compatibility issues with drivers, and you'll get the best out of Windows 10 *Smile
