  1. Updates on metered connection using Win 10

Hi. I am new to Win 10 and so far it has not been a pleasant experience. All of a sudden I'm on a metered connection. What the hell is that? I have never been on a metered connection before that I am aware of anyway. I'm so confused re downloading updates. In Win 7 You looked and chose what updates you wanted to install and that was that. It was easy. Win10 has made everything so difficult. I need help. I don't understand the thought process. I'm back to being a novice. Thank you. RWL

Windows 10 Creators Update Might Force Updates Even on Metered Connections

A wording change in the latest build of the upcoming Creators Update for Windows 10 has users on metered connections worried. In previous Microsoft Insider's builds of the Creators Update, the section of the license agreement pertaining to automatic updates said "updates will be downloaded and installed automatically, except over metered connections (where charges may apply)."

In this latest build, the wording has been changed to a more worrisome version implying updating may still happen for important updates: "We'll automatically download and install updates, except on metered connections (where charges may apply). In that case, we'll automatically download only those updates required to keep Windows running smoothly."

Obviously, this implies critical updates and such may still be pulled from a metered connection without prior user consent. Considering many "critical updates" from Microsoft today come in the form of "Patch Tuesday" rollups often nearing a gig, this could get expensive on a metered connection where users pay by the gigabyte or worse.

    Win 10 metered connections

I was getting the big 1607 update to win 10 over a home wifi no problems. Before the update had finished downloading I had moved off the home wifi. The next opportunity I had to connect to the internet I had to tether to my mobile phone which has very
limited data quota. I find that in win 10 that I am not able to turn on the metered connection setting for that tethered connection until I am actually connected to that connection. I do this a quickly as possible but I found that win 10 immediately resumed
the big update download on a LTE (4G) connection and consumed most of my data quota before I had managed to get the metered connection setting enabled. Even after turning the metered setting to on, the download did not instantly stop but I needed to shut down
and restart win 10 it seems to make it recognize the change in the status of the connection. Is this just because the download had already started on the home wifi and the shut down and restart was needed to make win update check the new status of the now
metered connection? I know that I can do things like turn off the data on the mobile phone while I sort out the metered connection but failing that it seems that by default Win 10 will suck up most of your mobile data before you have a chance to turn on the
metered setting. Can't this setting be made to be on for ALL new wifi connections and then you selectively turn it off?

    Win 10 metered connections

    Hi,

By default, metered connection for Windows 10 is turned off. Whenever you connect to a wired/wireless connection, you have to enable it manually. What happened to this situation, is that the update is already running before we have turned the metered connection
on. It may take you moments before it will recognize the command. That’s the reason why it only took effect after you restarted your computer. Moving forward, we can set the metered connection to every wired/wireless connection that we need to limit.

    Regards.
