Odd. I notice your window doesn't say Administrator and Power Shell though.

    So in order:

    1/ Copy the command
Winsat formal -restart cleanWinsat formal -restart clean

2/ Close any open applications and your browser so that you just have the desktop on view.

3/ Right click the start button and select Windows PowerShell (Admin). The user account control box opens to ask if you are sure.

4/ You should see the PowerShell window as shown below.

5/ Right click as if to paste your command and it should automatically fill in and run on its own.

6/ I just re-ran mine and it took 1 minute 51 seconds to complete.

  2. Just a correction to the above:

WinSAT works in both Command Prompt and PowerShell, BUT the command MUST be run as ELEVATED or it opens a new window which will disappear after completion.

To open Command prompt or PowerShell as Administrator do the following:

    • Press Windows key
    • Type CMD or PowerShell
    • When the application is found and is selected press CTRL + LeftShift + Enter OR you can just right mouse click the icon and select Run as Administrator
    • You will see a User Account Control Dialog box asking you if you want to allow this app to make changes to your device. Press YES
    • Now you have either a console window or a PowerShell window with the title Administrator: Command Prompt OR Administrator: Windows PowerShell
    • Type the correct command: Winsat formal -restart clean

    Thanks *Smile

Funny how you can look at something a dozen times and not spot it. Not sure how I came to do a double paste like that (but it actually worked because I used it today as a check)

YW! Yes it seems to work with the double commands too, which is kind of weird...or just brilliant programming in the tool and parameter checking. *Smile

  6. If you compare the lines says Disk Sequential and Disk Random and compare that to Moolys numbers, you can clearly see that your HDD is extremely slow in comparison.

Just by swapping to an SSD (even a cheap one) your Random 16.0 Read score will go up a lot, and you will notice the results in daily usage.

Overall the other numbers, except Disk reads are decent, nothing to worry about there since you are not a Power User.

Yes, those disk speeds are surprisingly slow (I must check my 11yr old Acer laptop that is running W10 and see what that comes out at).

An SSD has to make a big difference to the overall 'user experience' based on those figures.

That SSD looks OK to me.

When I was looking at the Lenovo site I think I noticed they had a forum as well. You could also ask for confirmation of your choice there although I can't really see any issues.

In preparation for clean installing you will need to create a 'bootable' flash drive of Windows 10 using the 'Media Creation Tool'.

    Second option here currently:
    Download Windows 10

Your PC should already have all the license details stored by MS and so there is nothing to do on that score.

You also need to become familiar with how to set your PC to boot from the memory stick. That is something you can look at now and a quick web search shows it to be a little different to usual (a hidden button ?).

I will have another look at that later *Smile It will be straightforward though.

  12. Jeez, that is slow, hahah! But still good enough for many light Linux or older Windows distributions.

    Without doubt *Smile

At 11yr old its not worth spending money on and in any case the HDD is an older EIDE type and so not easily available, let alone looking for a higher performance version.

Once its up and running its not to bad but start up takes a couple of minutes and disk thrashing seems to go on for ever. LibreOffice opens in around 35+ seconds (I just timed it) compared to 1.5 on the Dell with an SSD.

I'm kinda fond of the old thing though.
