I love retro computers. Have even been thinking about testing my ancient Abit-BP6 Dual Celeron MB that has 2 Celeron 366MHz. Water chilled I ran them at 732MHz @133MHz FSB (default 66MHz). But I don't have all the other needed peripherals available at the moment, so can't get it powered up and booted.

Is it retro *Cool it might be worth something *Party

Your figures look pretty decent, and to think how we fretted over trying to gain a little bit here and a little there back in the days of Vista and W7. An SSD just blows all that stuff into the weeds.

  3. Agree. Not good but not bad either.

Yes SSDs has changed everything, especially M.2 4xPCIe NVMe drives in RAID. *Wink

The UX305 is for office stuff and is more than capable for that.

U46SV is for development and running VMs. Only thing I think I need to add is 8GB more RAM as I run out of memory when I fire up too many VMs.

But overall both laptops does their jobs great and with decent speeds.

Update: Just to put things in perspective, my next computer will have almost all the above numbers about 10x bigger. But I won't invest in such machine just yet, because I don't need that kind of horsepower right now. Eventually I will however. *Smile

    2013 Asus Zenbook Prime (UX31A)...

Both machines feature an i7 Processor. The Lenovo is an i7-7600U, the Asus is an i7-3517U. The Lenovo features 16gig of RAM and a 1TB SSD drive. The Asus features 4gig of RAM and a 256gig SSD drive.

    Desktop by comparison...

    Updating laptop.... [IMG]

32gig of RAM, i7-7700K, Samsung 512gig NVME SSD drive. See My Computer for desktop specs. BTW, It appears my Lenovo slightly outperforms my desktop when looking at the final score, but...

    Anyway those are my numbers.

  5. Oh, you have the Lenovo X1 Yoga 2017? I love those numbers for it. Confirms what I was expecting from such device. I envy you. But not for long...once I get a good deal I buy one. It has all I need from a Laptop except terrible GPU, but that one a Desktop computer will fix. *Smile

My next desktop will have pretty close to those numbers yours has. Except I will put the NVMe drives in dual, triple or quad RAID mode, once such motherboards become more common.

But as I mentioned earlier, I have no need for such powerful machine just yet. Except for the portable Yoga with all it's amazing features. *Smile

Yep *Smile Posted it here - 2017 Hardware Thread - Page 208 - Windows 10 Forums

Had it custom built. You can see the specs in the link posted. Also came with an OLED touch screen *Smile

Anyway I really love this machine and it flies in comparison to my 2013 Asus notebook. That said, what I really wanted was the Microsoft Surface Book Pro, but I didn't want to get last year's model and was waiting for a new release but that didn't happen in time thus the Lenovo.

Those figures are deeply impressive *Smile

I could use those for some of the circuit simulations I do. I had one that took around 6 hours on the Acer to generate around 90 seconds worth of 'real time' data. It was worth it though. I guess that is where the speed differences and better CPU and RAM would make a difference.

Really nice looking device. And reading the thread, yes ALL Lenovo laptops has that annoying loud fan noise. This is one reason I am also considering maybe another Asus. They are really quiet and stay cool. I even expect the ultrathin laptops with insane specs that just got announced but not yet available for purchase, will stay quiet. Similar devices as the Lenovo ultra portables, but with even better numbers on paper. Only problem is that I might want an LTE modem, and Asus does not include one of those, while Lenovo does.

Asus has been impressing me year after year with their latest creations. Even the UX305 is impressive for it's low-end specs. Love it.

While the fan noise can get annoying the good thing is it doesn't happen all the time so in the end it's a non issue.

What does suck is the extremely thin sounding speakers for such an expensive notebook. The speakers on the Asus blows these away in comparison. Not even close. That said, I knew the speakers were weak going in as a number of reviews pointed them out. Didn't bother me though since I use headphones with it when I'm out and about. I also have a JBL Flip 4 Bluetooth speaker I use when I want to watch movies or listen to music with others.

BTW, I did look at the current line of Asus Zenbooks but didn't like what I saw, thus also the Lenovo. Oh, and the OLED screen is quite impressive and allows me to showcase my photo work in all it's glory when pushing sales *Smile

Lastly, if you choose to get the Lenovo X1 Yoga and go with the OLED screen, you won't be able to get LTE module. Why, I'm not sure and Lenovo couldn't answer that. I just know you don't get LTE with the OLED model. I don't need it anyway I just use my mobile hotspot off my phone.

Really nice looking notebook. Love that color. And the specs are impressive as well.

What I don't like is the lack of ports. I found out very early when I bought my Asus in 2013 that that I needed at times more than 2 USB ports. Especially when away from the house. What I love about the Lenovo is it has 3 USB 3.0 ports and 2 Thunderbolt ports. I guess that's part of the business class this notebook was designed for.

Anyway, those are some nice looking Asus machines with impressive specs top end specs.

  12. The Pro has 2 Thunderbolt Ports and 2 USB3.1 ports...that is more than I will ever need *Smile

The Flip has only 2 USB3.1 ports but comes bundled with a USB-C dock that gives you SD card reader, LAN, VGA, HDMI, standard USB 3.0 and a USB-C port for charging.

I like both of them...both for very different usage scenarios. But both support the Asus Pen, which is still quite pathetic compared to the Surface Pen. *Smile

    Updating laptop....

I just like having more ports for more options in a portable. That said, those should be enough for a portable laptop. And I like the idea of getting a docking station with the flip. BTW I do miss having a full sized SD card reader like that on my Asus. On the Lenovo you just get mini SD card reader.

That said, the only time I'd need a card reader is to transfer files from y camera. And since my camera does USB 3.0 transfer speed for both SD an CF cards, I can simply hook a USB cable and whalla... files transferred.

At any rate I really like that Asus Zenbook Flip and had I not bought my Lenovo, I might have given serious consideration to the Flip had it been out at the time. Of course I would have maxed out the specs, just as I did the Lenovo.

Anyway, we're getting way off topic here since I'm sure the OP still has questions about their issue.

    Peace *Cool
