Updating the already long downloaded Win10 upgrade files

    Hi all,
Early August the Win10 upgrade files downloaded automatically on my laptop running Win 7 Ultimate 64bits. I was willing to make sure that the upgrade would succeed so I would only install a pretty stable and mature version of Win10.
    I therefore have 2 questions:
    1) can I force some refresh/update of these upgrade files (even by restarting the whole download again from the most recent stable release of the upgrade) ?
    2) has MS already issued some actually "stable release" or service pack or more extensively tested version of Win10 or is it planned to come any time soon ? In that case, would the answer to my question above lead to that version ?
Thanks in advance for your appreciated support !

    :)

  2. Upgrade to Windows 10 Home, version 1511, 10586.fails

I have been running Win 10 for a couple of months now. It is the 1511 upgrade that fails. It seems to download the upgrade, installs over 50% and then fails at the end.

  3. remove windows 10 upgrade files

Here is the procedure I used on 7 computers in the last 2 days -- all successful:

It sounds to me like Win10 has already downloaded to your PC. If you are using windows 7, and have not installed win10 and do not want it, here is a procedure that I have used 4 times yesterday that worked.

    • Task Manager, processes, find and end GWX.exe

    • Control Panel, Uninstall a program, View installed updates, WAIT a long time

    • Now, enter KB3035583, uninstall it

    • Restart the PC

    • Disk cleanup, do both steps including the one for System -- this takes a while

    • You should find a file there that is about 5 G. It is the Win10 downloaded file. It will not be called that, but it should be the only very large file other than Winupdate cleanup, which you can do at the same time.

    • Delete

    • Restart

    • The startup will take a long time while it finishes cleanup

You can download the current Windows 10 build (10240) from here. Then burn to DVD or use a utility to expand on a USB Flash drive to install Windows 10 from there. The latest beta build is 10576 which will be released later, probably close to Christmas. If you install build 10240 you should be able to upgrade to 10576 by Windows Update when it is publicly available. All the ISOs from the first link can install both Windows 10 Home and Pro. In your case you need the 64-bit version and when you start setup from Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit they will be upgraded to Windows 10 Pro 64-bit.

Thank you for the reply. I'm pretty ok to wait until the 10576 official release. May I assume that it would then be the most stable Windows 10 release actually available ?

  6. It is the latest release that will be available to us unless you are an insider (tester)
The next big one will be mid summer or later.

10576 is an Insider Preview build.
The most current Insider Preview Build is 10586. The 10576 that you mentioned is already one build behind.
Just like build 10576, you can only download and install 10586 through Windows Update in Fast ring if you are set to receive preview builds. There is no ISO released by Microsoft.

Just to make sure I do not confuse you.
If you want to install Windows 10 over your Win 7 Ultimate, use the advice given by spapakons.
Windows 10 that you were advised to install is the Released version. You do not get Insider Preview build automatically from it unless you change the setting to receive preview builds.

So, we are talking about 2 different topics.

    adding..............
It appears that when Threshold 2 is released sometime on or after Nov 10th, it will be the same copy as Insider Preview Build 10586.
If you want, hold on to your Win 7 Ultimate and wait for the Threshold 2 release.

Thanks for all your advice ! I'm actually *not* seeking for some more beta/preview/latest version -- I'm much more concerned by the stability and maturity of the build, being able to install it directly, detect (and fetch and intall) all the required drivers for the laptop integrated hardware, and, why not, run flawless Updating the already long downloaded Win10 upgrade files :)

Each time Microsoft releases a new build, it is meant to be a better version than the previous one.
A new build will have fixes to the bugs found/reported from previous build. So it's an on-going improvement program.
If you are with Insider program, then you should update to new build when it is released.
This may not satisfy your query, but that's all I can say.

10586 or Threshold 2 is the next stable release/update to Windows 10. Overall experience seems to be a lot better than the initial 10240 build release. It also allows you to do a Clean Install without having to do an upgrade install first as you had to do with 10240.

I'd say 10586 is the build you want to use for sure.

Thanks all again. I'll definitely go with Threshold 2 when it gets official (I'm not on an Insider Preview program).
