Windows 10: upfc.exe Updateability From SCM - What is it?

Hi, I am Abdulqadir Aliyev, an Azerbaijani Windows User, and I am here to ask a question, which was a mystery for me for more than a half of a year.I use Microsoft Windows 10 21H2, Build 19044.1645, and every time when I boot up my laptop, I see a process named Updateability from SCM, or upfc.exe. Although it takes only 0,6MB RAM when it's running and pretty much 0% CPU, Disk, GPU and Network. Size is 118KB, located at C:\Windows\System32, digital signatures from Microsoft Corporation.I have tried to do a lot of research about upfc.exe, like what it is, is it a virus or malware. Need help with .scm files in Windows 10


My problem is specific, I've tried some advice on other sites and have had no luck thus far.

I have a program I used called GIMP . That is a photo editing software. To install new filter effects, there are files called .scm I place them into Gimps' scripts folder etc. Anyway, I was curious and opened one of the .scm files with notepad , now the .scm files still work, they are still SCM files, the problem is the annoying note pad image associated with them, gets me confused sometimes,

Also, when you press on the .scm files their contents open, I Don't want that to happen. I have tried some suggestions and still have yet to resolve this. How do i revert the notepad file association with Gimp's .scm script files ; in windows 10 ?


Gimp is a free software, and scripts can be found with a internet search. Maybe some one is willing to download a .scm script and recreate the problem in windows 10 by opening the .scm with notepad ; then give me the answer to fix this .

Hi dalchina. Good news, I followed your suggestion and reinstalled the update and now it appears as "installed correctly" *Biggrin Maybe it was not necessary to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter or maybe if necessary. But using it I do not think it could have worsened something. The installation was very fast, unlike the first time it showed step 1 and step 2 completed.

Would like to know if the default app for a .scm (script file) is "Internet Explorer" in Settings>Choose apps by file type

Hi wondermuse, yes, by default in Windows an scm file does not have a default application

It is not easy to remove a file association in Windows 10,

Open Windows File Explorer

On the view Ribbon (tab) check the box marked 'File Name Extensions'

Close File Explorer

Right click your Desktop and choose New - Text File

Change the file extension on that new file from .txt to .exe

Confirm the change

Right click a .scm file, choose open with - Choose another App

Check the box marked 'Always use this app to open .scm files' - IMPORTANT!

Scroll to the bottom and click 'More Apps'

Again scroll to the bottom and choose 'Find another app on this PC'

Navigate to the dummy file exe on your Desktop and click OK

The .scm file will not open

Delete the dummy exe file on your Desktop and restart your PC

The file association will then be broken!
