  1. upgrade a windows 7 system to windows 10

I need to upgrade a windows 7 home system to windows 10 home for a friend. I do not want to do a clean install but need to preserve the files and programs on win 7. I bought a commercial version of windows 10 from Best Buy. The commercial package contained a USB flash drive drive and win 10 license key. The directions in the box are to switch the BIOS to boot from the USB and reboot.

It is critical that I preserve the data and programs from the win 7 system. It appears that the system installation must reboot at several times during the installation.

    A couple of questions:

    1. Will starting the upgrade from the USB flash drive allow the allow an upgrade from win 7 to win 10 or only a clean install?

    2. Does this installation reboot from the system hard drive or does it build the new system by rebooting the USB memory drive?

    3. If from the hard drive, at what point do I need to switch the BIOS back to the system hard drive?

    4. At what point will when do I select the option to preserve data and programs from win 7?

    5. Does any one know where I can find the steps to do the upgrade from a USB flash drive?

Windows 10 upgrade problem, no input accepted

I really hate having to come here and ask for help, but I really am stumped. It hurts my geek pride. I have a PC with fairly modern hardware in it. It has a p8p67 pro in it. I have tried upgrading windows 10 on it twice now. Both times I have had the same result.

After windows finishes upgrading it goes to the log in/set up screen. I can't do anything. No keyboard or mouse input is accepted.

I will list some, or hopefully all, of the troubleshooting steps I have tried:
    • Move keyboard and mouse to different USB ports.
    • Try different keyboard or mouse.
    • Restart computer, repeatedly.
    • Google for related issues.
    • Update Bios, because why not.
    • Create boot media and revert to windows 7.
The windows 10 system restore boot media works fine with keyboard and mouse. All USB ports work in windows 7. I don't know what is wrong. I suspect that windows 10 is lacking a driver of some sort, but since the computer accepts no input I have no way of checking for which driver let alone installing it.

Please help me figure this out. If I have to revert back to windows 7 again, I am not going to get it upgraded to windows 10. Thank you in advanced.

Windows 10 upgrade problem, no input accepted

i've seen this when the stock USB drivers went kaput. Only ever seen it once - i used a PCI USB 2.0 card and connected the mouse and keyboard to that, and manually updated the USB 2/USB 3 drivers.

Windows 10 to be Free Upgrade for Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 Users

In what could be a fundamental shift in how Microsoft monetizes its flagship product, the Windows operating system, the company decided to offer its upcoming Windows 10 as a free upgrade for existing users of Windows 8.1 and Windows 7. This offer will be applicable only for the first year following Windows 10 launch (after which, Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 users will have to pay to upgrade to Windows 10). Windows 10 will see the return of the Start Menu, a productive Desktop environment, and cutting-edge new API features such as DirectX 12.

How to upgrade 1903 systems now that 2004 KB is no longer available: I have several old systems on an airgapped network that need to be patched.
