Windows 10: Upgrade from 1909 to 21H2 consistently fails. SetupDiag crashes with empty log file

I am having this issue on multiple computers and can't seem to figure out what is causing it.We have windows updates pushed out by SCCM typically but we found these computers had issues updating to 21H2. I've been working on getting a good number brought up in versions but am stuck on a handful of computers that all have this same issue. I have used windows update assistant to try updating it and I typically get to ~94%-99% and then get error 0x8007042b. Using a windows media creation tool has the same issue when I try it out. I have also tried PSWindowsUpdate in Powershell but it either hangs

Windows 10 1909 to 20h2 update fail - error 0x800703EE

Windows 18362 = 1903

0x800703EE = Error file invalid

The volume for a file has been externally altered so that the opened file is no longer valid.


List any of these installed or recently uninstall non-Microsoft software:

a) antivirus
b) firewall
c) drive encryption


After the steps in the prior post you can attempt a Windows upgrade.
If it works then you're set.

Cannot upgrade 1709 -> 1909

Ok, I've been quite busy those several days. Tried running checklist with no result, but then in a suggested thread found a way to do "step by step" upgrade using UUP dumps. Managed to get to 1809 and now stuck again.

Sfc shows nothing, DISM cannot find source image

There is only update not installed that keeps failing - Adobe Flash Player, but I doubt it has any relevance to the issue.

One more thing. When upgrade process fails, it sounds like power off (fans and hdds are spinning down), not a regular reset.

Watch out for the Bots...

One fairly easy way to check your system is to download and run the setupdiag utility from the site below. It will check the logs created during the failed upgrade attempt and hopefully, give you some good info. Copy and paste the listing produced and
remove info you may not want to share from the text file.

It may be noted, using the current install process takes you to Build 1909, which is just the install of 1903 plus some cumulative updates which bring it up to 1909. The 0x8024xxxx errors may be those updates failing..
