Upgrade from win 8.1 to win 10 with multiple disk drives?

Hello all members of the forum,

Just for precautioun before upgrading, I would like to get fast professional advice if and how is better to move on to the new OS when I have 2 disk drives.
Disk 0 - C: (ssd 120gb ) here I have all system and hardware software installed including Rockstar Games Social Club.
Disk 1 - A: (hdd 1tb ) there I have all game files for GTA V, Steam and Origin.

1)My guestion is if there will be any errors with this kind of disk drive configuration?
2)If there will be instabilities, can I clean install the new win 10 without losing the data on A: disk and would also able to fully use them on clean windows 10?

    Thanks in advance,

    :)

Upgrade from win 8.1 to win 10 with multiple disk drives?

I had no errors when I upgraded with 5 drives, my Windows sits on the C drive and I have data backups and work files on my F drive and all my Steam games on the H drive and backups on the Z drive and user folders on the D drive.

If you put your data on the A drive and move your user folders there too you should be able to access them just fine if you have to reinstall Windows again, just point it to where ever you move your user folders to, of course you'll likely have to reinstall the programs themselves that are on the A drive but the data from your game should be fine there since you won't be installing Windows to that drive if you would do a clean install as long as you don't make a mistake and mistakenly install Win to the A drive later on and format it, that would be bad and something which I've done in the past because some of my drives were same GB in size and I wasn't sure which was which so I took a guess.

Thank you for the instant advice, Traijan!
After reading, I have developed a couple of new guestions:

    1) I have MSI Afterburner installed on C: ( OS disk ), and I have underclock set when windows starts up.I have made this because of GPU errors while gaming. Will this setting work perfectly after upgrading to win 10 ?

2)When you mentioned about moving files from one drive to another I wondered if it is fully okay to move game files for example from one pc to another to play them - will they play with the same good performance and without errors as in the first pc you have installed the game ?

I can't answer your first question about Afterburner as while it's installed on my desktop I don't use it.

As for number 2, it depends on what you are moving. If you are talking about moving the saved game files, from one PC to another, I've done that lots of times between my laptop and desktop and as far as the performance, it depends on the hardware in each PC. For example I move some of my saved games from my desktop to my laptop and they perform better because my laptop is designed to be a gaming laptop and has the game already installed so I am simply dropping the saved game files into the same folder on the laptop as they are on the desktop.

I have yet to encounter a problem from doing this when it's just the saved game files.

If on the other hand you're talking about moving whole programs from one PC to another PC then you would likely run into problems since many games require writing info to the Windows registry. So if you simply want to move saved games from one PC to another, then should not be a problem, has never been a problem for me.

If I were you I'd go check out the MSI forums to see if any users are having issues with Afterburner when upgrading to W10. I've left my laptop at W7 since I know for certain that there are a couple things that need drivers that are not yet available for W10.

Edit: Always make backups of any important files you don't want to lose.

If you eventually do a clean custom install most likely need to delete the drive A: and what will happen when install Windows to the SSD other drive is going to need to be initialized as New Volume and you will loose the Drive letter, all can be done in Disk Management after the clean install. Left the drive untouched during clean install do not think what is on it will work then.

As always need to backup all important file in case of first and need to do upgrade first (before anything remove Anti-Virus software), then you can do clean install afterwards.

Upgrade from win 8.1 to win 10 with multiple disk drives?

So what you are saying is that If I were to do a clean install of Windows 10 today, I would lose all the data on my F,G,H,Z drives? Why would the OP need to delete drive A? Isn't W10 like W7 and you can choose which drive to install it on with a clean install and the rest of the drives are fine and will be seen by W10 just as W7 has always done?

I understand that he'd have to reinstall any programs on the A drive to make them work with a fresh install of an OS but don't quite catch why he'd need to delete the A drive.

From which OS you moved to Win 10 and did you choose a clean install or you kept your files and settings?

I would say to delete those drives if have software especially on them as those programs going to be looking for files that were on the C: Drive(OS) before clean install, be best to delete it during the clean install. Now with you if it is just backup i would leave it of course. Yes clean install is same as Windows 8.1, 7. Not knowing exactly what is on his A: Drive to say, yes he has to do this, only if software or games are on them as these will put files on main drive and cause you to reinstall them anyway to correct them.
Plus as you also know, backup everything anyway, never know what will go wrong

First i had Windows 8.1 Pro, i upgraded to Windows 10 Pro, then i did a clean install so there is no way to save settings, do your settings after it completes. If talking about upgrade i did first for saving settings ?

So you would say that clean install is better than just upgrading ?

Upgrade from win 8.1 to win 10 with multiple disk drives?

A clean install is sometimes necessary depending on the outcome of the upgrade. (My upgrade went great but I had only just reinstalled W7 after a mainboard replacement about a month prior to upgrading to W10, where as my partners computer he had Vista on it for years and years and he used the latest tech preview and it failed the upgrade and he had to clean install the tech preview, which eventually updated to the RTM, and he had made extensive backups at my constant nagging).

For me, it hasn't yet been necessary, I only had issues with permissions on the user folders, other than that, my machine boots a few seconds faster and everything pretty much works that I've tried so far. But there are people that run into all kinds of problems and will need to do that clean install after doing the upgrade

(remember that you need to do the upgrade so that windows 10 can activate itself, then you won't need to physically activate it again for subsequent clean installs so you must at least do the upgrade one time so that W10 can activate itself for the hardware in your computer).

If my computer had slowed down, or had issues then I would have done a clean install but as it is, it wasn't necessary. Although I'm sure in 6 months from now I'll want to do a clean install just to clean out the OS as I'm a messy computer operator.

You must first upgrade to receive Windows 10 activation.

You cannot fresh install Windows 10 before you upgrade.

Before upgrading create a full disk image of your SSD if you have the space to store it on your HDD. This can save your ass if you find Windows 10 asplodes for whatever reason.

Then uninstall hardware related utilities, like afterburner, Asus Ai suite, fancontrol software, motherboard utilities, ROG-related utilities. This does not include drivers.

Proceed to upgrading to Windows 10. You non-system partitions will not be modified. If you backed up your Windows partition, choose to keep nothing when upgrading, it goes much smoother.

After the upgrade is complete, you can fresh install (though choosing to keep nothing is exactly that) Windows 10 on that computer as many times as you want.

Restore things you need from the backup, and try to locate Windows 10 compatible replacements for your hardware related utilities.; like afterburner.

Exactly the case for many here, want a fresh install to clean out clutter left over. As long as you have a disc for old OS or image, all software backed up and most games either on disc or steam, origin client for you to reinstall easily never loosing your saves.

To some feel it works better as clean install, sure you are fine way you are for now. Some do clean install every so often for last reasons you mentioned.
