Windows 10: Upgrade to 10 failed - unable to update reserved partition

Hi Guys,


I have tried to upgrade to windows 10 from windows 7, but after downloading, it prompts the above.


Tried finding how to solve the problem only, where it is a known problem and there are steps to free up the RESERVED partition.


Problem is, my C: does not have a RESERVED partition. Only SYSTEM, and DATA partition..


Is there any way of solving the issue?


I don't mind formatting the C: SSD, but I am not sure how to backup my entire C: and being able to restore to the formatted SSD without again over-writing the RESERVED partition.

cannot locate system reserved partition on Disk Management

This Windows 10 upgrade error is usually caused by insufficient space on the System Reserved partition. When you install Windows to a partitioned MBR disk, Windows will create an additional partition without drive letter labeled as System Reserved, which
stores important boot files and normally locates before the system partition (often known as C: drive). On Windows 7, it often takes 100MB disk space, 350MB on Windows 8, and 500MB on Windows 10. Since upgrading to Windows 10 needs more space on the System
Reserved partition, Windows 10 will not upgrade unless it detects that the System Reserved partition has enough space. If you fresh install Windows 10 to a specific partition, you won't receive this error. By the way, the System Reserved partition first appearance
was on Windows 7, so you won't have this error on previous versions of Windows.

To solve this problem of being unable to update System Reserved partition, you can increase the size of System Reserved partition using third party free partition software like AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard, which can manage your disks and partitions
without data loss.

I'd like to see your Disk Management.

Step 1: Download this zip file (contains dmDskmgr-vd.mmc)

dmDskmgr-vd.zip
Step 2: Double click dmDskmgr-vd.zip to open the compressed folder
Double click dmDskmgr-vd.mmc to launch the custom Disk Management console
You'll get an output similar to this:




Press Alt+PrtScn to grab a snapshot of just the Disk Management window
Open Paint and Ctrl+V to paste it, then save the image
Attach the image to a new post.
Option 2: Use Disk Management in the x-Menu (right click the Windows menu (aka Start), select Disk Management)
Select View > Bottom > Disk list
Maximize the window and grab the screen shot.

Ok good,

Download Minitool Partition Wizard CD
Pick the x64 version: pwfree91-x64.iso




When the download completes,

Put the ISO on an external device (thumb drive or CD - its small)

Boot the machine to the Minitool Partition Wizard

Shrink C: by 400 MB - leaving 400 MB before (0 after) the C: partition

Grow the partition labeled Data by 400 MB

Double check the pending operations (lower left)

If everything looks good, apply the changes

The end result should be
Data partition = 500 MB
C: partition reduced by 400 MB

Shut down your machine
disconnect the power cable from the other drives

Boot to windows

The easiest method in my opinion, is:

Read through everything and ask any questions before proceeding... lots of well versed members here who can provide answers. The tutorial is great ... step-by-step instructions.

It's fairly easy once you get going.

 

If it is easier, you don't have to make a bootable USB of MiniTool Partition Wizard. You can just install it in Windows and do exactly the same thing.

Thanks! Your steps worked. Windows 10 agreed to be install via the windows update page.

Left it to run for a few hours.. But when I came back, the screen is in Win 7 Login.

Logged in, and a list of prompts came up, like winspool32 stopped working, XPCOM not loaded, blah blah blah..

Even when I tried to DL the windows ISO mediacreation tool from IE11, the file was immediately deleted after labeled as a malware/virus

Basically, I think my OS is screwed..

I am now downloading the ISO from another PC and hope it can bring my PC back to life.

Just curious, is the ISO created based on the OS serial of the creation PC, or it does not require it, and can be installed in any PC?

Ok, got past one hurdle ... there seems to be something amiss on your machine. The Media Creation Tool (MCT) should not have been flagged as malware.

What Anti-virus program are you running?

Here's a few things I would do:

• Click here to download Old Timer-TFC.
  >> save the application to your Desktop.
  *Info Old Timer-TFC is a standalone application, there is no install.
  
  *WarningSave your work and close all open windows.
  TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
  
  Restart your machine in case there are any system operations pending
  
  Right click, run as administrator TFC
  
  Click the Start button to begin the cleaning up temporary files and folders.
  *Warning Do not work on other things while TFC is running - most applications use some sort of temporary files. Just let TFC run by itself on the machine until it completes.
  
  *Busted Restart your machine immediately after TFC completes.
  
  
• AdwCleaner is a two step process. Scan then Clean
  
  Click here to download AdwCleaner (author: Xplode)
  --> save the application to your Desktop.
  
  • Right-click AdwCleaner.exe on your Desktop and select Run As Administrator to run the scanner with full privilege rights.
    AdwCleaner is a standalone executable, there is no install.
    
    
  • Click on the Scan button.
    • AdwCleaner begins scanning your system. It might take some time to complete.
      
      
    • Review the detected objects grouped under each of the tabs.
      --> If there is something you KNOW should NOT be cleaned, clear the checkbox
      
      next to the object. If you're not sure about an object, paste the scan logfile (AdwCleaner[R#].txt) in a new post for a member to review and advise you.

      Each time AdwCleaner runs, the log file number [#] is incremented, the highest number is the most recent. There are two log files, one for the scan (AdwCleaner[R#].txt) and one for the clean (AdwCleaner[S#].txt).
  Paste the entire clean logfile (AdwCleaner[S#].txt) in your next post.
  --> AdwCleaner logs are located in the C:\AdwCleaner folder if you need to reference them again

I think the Windows 10 installation screwed up my win 7, which was fine. The services not able to load are signs the OS is not running correctly.

The ISO clean install did the trick... Now it's getting my mail client and old emails back... What a chore Microsoft is putting me through.

Can't imagine the poor folks who are not familiar with their PCs and just using it as a email and bill paying tool.

They probably will be shopping for a new PC due to issues like mine or more

 

A Clean Win10 install solves many issues caused by an upgrade. I think it also depends on how the upgrade was installed ... GWX seems to cause the most issues, using an ISO to upgrade causes fewer issues.

To be fair ... it's more of a matter of support for old programs than the OS itself ... there's a lot of carry over with an upgrade and there are a lot of programs that were updated to run on Win8 and Win10. The upgrade install does not change old 3rd party programs - it sets compatibility.

A Clean install forces users to reinstall their programs (hopefully getting the newest from the vendor's website or updating them after using the original disc). If the disk is wiped, then no virus can survive - that's an added bonus.

Agreed. I've seen this especially on upgrades of W7, more so than W8. Clean installs have resolved every single issue I have come across.
