Windows 10: upgrade to upgrade to 2004 from 1909

Hi guys,
Im considering using an in place upgrade to upgrade to 2004 from 1909 rather than using the Windows Update method to get the 2004 Feature Update. Tech Support have said they regard version 2004 as stable now and are recommending customers to upgrade.
I was speaking to PC tech support today and was told that sometimes data can be lost using an in place upgrade so their recommendation is to Upgrade through Windows Updates instead. When Ive read about the in place upgrade method on here before, the general feeling Ive got is that its supposed to be the most reliable method. I explained that I would use the Media Creation Tool to create installation media on a USB flash drive. Then I explained that by doing this it would serve multiple purposes
1. I would have bootable media so I would have the option to do a clean installation if I ever needed to.
2. I can perform an in place upgrade by inserting the flash drive, select the flash drive to open it in File Explorer and on the opening screen select setup to perform the in place upgrade.
3. I could perform the in place upgrade to do a repair install if I ever had any future issues

He said that he fully understood but that an in place upgrade can cause data loss...so the Windows Update was still their recommended method of upgrading. Id appreciate Shawns feedback ..or anyone else with experience of in place upgrades. It seems like a very useful tool to me particularly when used as a repair install if a PC is having issues.
If used though as a repair install, my only concern is I have two drives on my PC, an SSD with Windows installed on it (Drive C and a separate standard hard disc that i have installed most other Apps/Games on (Drive D. I have asked the question recently if a repair install affects all Apps/Games on Drive D: meaning that they would need to be uninstalled and reinstalled.

Here is how to upgrade to version 2004

Way 1. Open Settings>Update & Security>Windows Update

Way 2. Go to https://microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 then download the Windows 10 Upgrader App

Windows 10 upgrade 1909 to 2004 failed with error 0x8007042b - 0x4000D

Hi,

I've been trying to upgrade my Windows 10 installation (1909 to 2004), and having tried a lot of things without success It always rolls back the upgrade with the following error message:

Error 0x8007042b - 0x4000D The installation failed in the SECOND_BOOT phase with an error during MIGRATE_DATA operation

Regular Windows updates for 1909 works properly and I get updated as needed. In my attempts to perform the upgrade I've been trying everything I could including:

1. run DISM and SFC commands to fix corruptions (there aren't any)
2. remove softwaredistribution folder
3. remove Avast AV
4. perform clean boot
5. perform upgrade from media creation tool

I really need some help to investigate the log files to determine the root cause as reinstalling without apps will be extremely painful in my case. I've prepared the following files and can share directly with any advisor who will be willing to take a look
(if more are needed I can provide):

• Setupact.log and Setuperr.log from the following path C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther
• Setupact.log and Setuperr.log from the following path C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback
