    Upgrade to Windows 10

Hi Brink. My apologies. I meant to post this in the Clean install tutorial. That's what I get for staying up so late last night. I bought a new ssd so a clean install is my only option. Thank you for the reply. *SmileEdit: If it's not against the forum rules, I'll copy my post to the correct forum.

Today I used the mount method for the first time to upgrade from 10041 to 10049 and it was the fastest and most reliable method to date. I have some twenty odd installs behind me(mostly experimenting with drivers. Most were USB setup.exe upgrades and about 6 clean(Boot) installs. But this method, after downloading the ISO, from clicking Mount in File Explorer to a desktop only took about 15 minutes and everything(files, settings, even god Mode) was carried over.
I need to try it a few more times, but I think this'll be the method for my Win 8.1 desktop when the GA(RTM is too early) is out.
For my Win7 laptop I'll use USB ISO method.

    Hey Cliff,

    Thank you for the feedback.

Were you not able to update to build 10049 from 10041 through Windows Update?

I use mobile broadband (prepaid) and Microsoft has update turned off for metered connections for the Technical Preview, and I cannot hack it(I've gone through the registry about 30 times on 4 different builds). All the settings can be set to data download and download over metered but not for updates. Even Defender can only be updated through the UI but not Windows update. The last 2 ISOs I got through the Mega download were clean and installed well. I guess someone did the ESD trick and uploaded. But I still download to a sandbox and check with Defender, MRT, Malwarebytes.

    Hi Shawn,

I downloaded the official 10074 ISO today, and instead of upgrading from a previous build like I have been, I'm going from Windows 7 after all this month's patches and optional updates to see if the process has at all noticeably improved(was good to start with).

This time I've chosen "C) In Windows 7, you will need to step 5 below." instead of using external media such as a USB or DVD. I'm in the process of upgrading right now, but it has worked great. For my Windows 7 laptop I'll probably use this method. And for Windows 8.1 desktop like in post #16.

Microsoft, if anything, has really revolutionized how one can upgrade an operating system. It's even easier and faster than by Ubuntu now.

Thanks again for posting all paths & ways to do something in Windows.*Smile

    Hey Cliff,

Using ISO files are indeed much easier. I'm glad to hear that it went well. *Smile

    Upgrade to Windows 10

I was having a couple of problems with 74 after the upgrade(my fault, I forgot to uninstall some software like Samsung Magician, which Ten doesn't seem to like the "taste" of Attachment 18280). Decided to try a clean install and everything but windows update(metered connection) works. The default Microsoft drivers(except for video of course) work fine if not better, even the Realtek ones.

Hello Shawn well mate I am not caving in but am curious as to what it is like as my brother in the UK really disliked 10. So I am just going to do a clean 7 install on a spare SSD and plonk 10 on top so I don't have to worry about files etc..

What I want to know is what is it about it that is going to be more fun at ?parties?

John you'd be better off performing a clean install than an upgrade install mate. I've found 10 to be a very good OS OOB, no third party programs needed. I think you'll be surprised John.

Now probably a stupid question and after a graveyard shift probably not the best time to try it out but I have only a limited time at my place to do it.
I have a spare drive with a clean install of 7 on it and the ISO of 10. I am just wondering whether to just do the upgrade or a clean install but maybe I ma reading it wrong - the ISO ?I can do either? Like Gav said the clean install is probably the best so it means I have to wipe the install of 7 form it the spare drive and just boot from the ISO?

If that is the case I might clone the install to another spare drive and try it on that one.

One last query I installed MSE on the 7 install for quickness does it have to come off in either scenario.

Sorry but it is a tad confusing right now.

NB Always the idiot just found the clean install info *Redface

    No problem John. *Smile

Yes, you can do an upgrade or clean install with the ISO file.

Personally, I would recommend to create a bootable USB with the ISO file, and do a clean install.

Shawn I have just asked something else in another thread re saving my 7 and using a clone for this upgrade. I now see the WMP will go and what exactly will happen to my WLM?? two applications I use a lot and I am not real happy with using stuff that uses "the cloud" or that One Drive - I like to keep my own data on my hard drive not somewhere in the never never??

So is it worth me trying as it seems to be something I might not like tough a lot of the 7 folks are liking it?

Oops sorry mate forgotten I had already posted that query.*Rolleyes

    Hey John,

Windows 10 comes with a Mail app that's just about as good as WLM. Plus, there's plenty of good free 3rd party alternatives available if needed.

WMC is replaced with the Music and Video apps.

You could setup Windows 10 with a local account instead of a Microsoft account to avoid OneDrive (cloud) if you like, but I actually find it quite useful.

I'd say install the latest Windows 10 build in a VM or dual boot now to kick the tires and see how you like it. If you don't like it, you can always just uninstall it. However, I think that you will be pleasantly surprised and may love it once you get familiar with it. *Smile
