    Upgrade to Windows 10

    Hi Shawn,

I'm wondering if I can also do an upgrade using Step 3 rather than Step 4 and still get the activation status?

The posts in this Twitter conversation by Gabe Aul and 'northfacehiker' (who seems to be a Microsoft support person and I've seen mentioned in Gabe's tweets before) suggest that an upgrade install from the ISO will activate, and I'm pretty sure I've seen similar behaviour when I installed an earlier Insider Build over Windows 8.1

    Hello David,

I was able to upgrade from 8.1 to 10 using the Media Creation Tool, and 10 was activated for me afterwards. It's worth a try, to see if it'll do the same for you.

    Hello Shawn,

    Thanks for that.

Sounds like it might work then.

(I'll do a backup of 8.1 first though, to be on the safe side in case I need to go back and start from 8.1 again.)

    Great post & tutorial Shawn.

I have a question regarding step 15, regarding the 'Change what to Keep' dialog box.

Can we go a bit in depth what happens when we choose any of the above 3 options?

I have a partition/2nd drive which my default windows users library points to (documents/pictures/videos/etc...). Say I choose the 'Nothing' option... what happens exactly? Are all the files also deleted from my 2nd drive or is just the primary hard drive [c:] cleaned out?

    Thank you for your time.

I couldn't wait for WU to pull the trigger here in Germany, all my planning, to let it do it, went down the hole. I used the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft on my Win 7 laptop and everything went fine. Of course the laptop runs better than ever now. The only negative is the same with the preview builds, I have to reinstall my graphics driver(Intel HD 2000, for some reason that never carries over and disappears from Device Manager, so I had a copy of the installer zip. I just hope that doesn't happen on my desktop with AMD card and CCC.
I'll do my desktop either tomorrow afternoon or Saturday, after I have the laptop finished in any case.

Good job updating those tuts so fast Shawn!

Hello Jake, and welcome to Ten Forums.

No worries. No matter which option you select, only your Windows partition will be affected. *Smile

Thanks! Might I ask what's the difference between 2nd and 3rd option?

"Keep personal files only" = What's in your C:\Users\(user-name) folders.

"Keep nothing" = basically like a clean install

n mate no go with the laptop install after waitinglike you suggested - it is still at build 10074. It is now midday 31st and allthe machine - left long enough does is go to a screen that says activate andthen some screens that ask me to enter the code from the box that I bought the10 in. I can get those screens by going to system and then activate too butstill the same result.
Now this is an absolute nonsense seeing that I entered theinsider program back in April and gotthe ISO downloaded for the preview. I have never bought the 10 nor have I gotthis mysterious box it came in.

I have contacted the insider porgema with queires withnoreplies and hav beeen onto Microsoft more times than I care to think aboutgenerally being pushed from pillar to post and I do get the feeleing thatwhoeve I speak to doesn't know what they are talking about and get shoved ontoanothe r operator - ame thing again.

The desktop is working fine and I am getting used to it butif this keeps up withis main laptop of mine I sshall shortly give 10 the flick and swap back in 7.

Any ideas what I can do because I have spent so much timegoing round the houses only to be left sitting here like some ever hopeful fool in the hope of gettinga straight answer to what the heck is going on.

    Hello John,

If you are wanting to get the free Windows 10 upgrade offer, then you will need to upgrade to Windows 10 from an activated Windows 7/8.1 instead for it to be activated. *Sad

Can you tell me, it is really needed to unninstall my antivirus programs? I've already manages to launch installation without doing it, but it crashes. May this be a reason?

    Upgrade to Windows 10

Yes mate this was a machine that was and has been running 7 Home for soem considerable time - in fact the machine I use at work when I have a few minutes. That install was done manymoons ago,
The only thing I can think of is that I cloned the original Samsung 840 to a brand new Samsing 850 EVO for obvious reasons and then put 850 into the machine and proceeeded to upgrade the cloned 7 using the ISO. It all sounds too proposterous to be true but that is exactly what I did.
I suppose ZI couldswap the 840 back in and clone the 850 again so I have the 7 and then use the ISO on the 840 drive.
All in all it is very frustrating.

I am sorry for the typos where they are but this new travel alptop of mine is not running a any spellchecks for some reason.

    John,

The free offer of Windows 10 get registered on Microsoft activation servers and is referenced by the hardware (motherboard/CPU/graphics card serial numbers) of the PC it was upgraded from. The only thing I can think of is that the cloning process you went though made the activation servers think it wasn't the same PC somehow.

However, MS activation servers have been under heavy load and not always able to activate at the time. You might keep trying to activate over the next couple of days to see if it may.

    Hi Shawn,

The issue with Media Creation Tool which I was facing has been solved by System Restore but the new issue is my own Internet connection. It is getting disconnected some time. So, will Media Creation Tool be able to resume the download progress?

Also, I had contacted Microsoft live support and asked them about the ISO files available at Windows 10 ISO. And they said that it cannot be used for first-time upgrade.

I can only use the ISO downloaded via Media Creation Tool for first-time upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

So, can you please help me with it?
