Shawn, thanks for these incredible tutorials.
After numerous false starts with Windows's inline upgrade (from Win 7 Pro), I created a USB using the new Media Creation Tool and used that to kickstart the Windows 10 upgrade. Everything seemed to go well until step 17 (the login screen), when I was faced with a black screen and no keyboard/mouse interaction (as if the USB ports just went dead), so at that point there's nothing I can do. Two attempts later I'm back in Windows 7 and having to restart the whole process.
I have a suspicion it might be UEFI related, but that could also be a red herring. Setting my BIOS to UEFI only as some have suggested only allows me to boot from the USB and nothing else. I just don't know where to go from here. Any ideas? Should I just stick with Windows 7 until Microsoft figures out how to update it successfully?

    Upgrade to Windows 10

Hello Jenyar, and welcome to Ten Forums. *Smile

Most likely, your Windows 7 is installed with BIOS and not UEFI.

Leave your BIOS set to BIOS mode, and see if you may be able to upgrade with an ISO file from within Windows 7.

As long as you still have hard drive activity during the black screen, it's best to let it sit until finished.

Your advice was spot on: there was still some HDD activity during the black screen. I unplugged the mouse and keyboard in case they were somehow interfering with the process (some people have experienced problems with their CM gaming mouse plugged in during installation) and left it running. After more than an hour the PC shut down or went into hibernation, and the power button brought me to the welcome screen. Plugged everything back in and was able to install Catalyst drivers, but the start menu wouldn't open and everything seemed generally unstable and unresponsive. I Alt-F4 rebooted and ended up back at the black screen. It took at least 40 minutes before Windows opened up into the same broken state.

I'll try safe boot tonight and troubleshooting drivers, but I must say at this point I'm seriously considering giving up!

So if I select to keep Nothing will it still activate? I'm going to do a clean install after it activates anyways, if it ever does.

    Upgrade to Windows 10

On Windows 7, since I would not be upgrading from I Microsoft account should I wait until the end of the process( Win 10 clean install is activated) or the beginning( during setup of Win 10 Upgrade) to link my Microsoft account?

    ktm,

If you don't upgrade to the free Windows 10 from your activated Windows 7, then Windows 10 will not be activated.

A direct clean install of the free Windows 10 will only be activated if you had already upgraded to 10 on the activated 7 PC first.
