    Upgrade: Windows update vs ISO

    Hi,

I would like to know if there's any difference between upgrading via Windows Update and via ISO (pro and cons).
I'm not trying to make a clean installation at the moment.

    Thanks.

    Cheers.

    :)

How to install Visual Studio 2015 Enterprise in Windows 10?

I downloaded VS 2015 Enterprise ISO from MSDN. Confirmed ISO is not corrupted and Windows 10 is updated. Trying to install it but getting no luck. Mounted the iso and running the vs_enterprise.exe as an administrator only shows the VS splash screen for
a second and then nothing happens. Please note I already uninstalled anti virus and disabled Windows Defender and Firewall. VS is not installed, no errors appeared. Is there a compatibility issue that I should know?

    Please help.

    Regards,

    JR

Trying to install anniversary update falis

Thanks to all for trying to help. Finally i got the update installed. What i did??

First of all uninstall completely VS 2015 Community using TotalUnisntaller

    Downloaded vs2015.3.iso.

Reinstall VS 2015 community with update 3.

And finally reinstall the "anniversary" from an iso file.

I guess the reinstallation from zero of VS 2015 reinstalled all the VC++ redistributables and fixed the problem.

    Thanks......

  4. Upgrade: Windows update vs ISO

I think both process "Window Update" and "ISO" will serve the same thing. Though if you consider ISO method, then you will need to create a Bootable USB Drive/DVD, so can use them for doing a clean installation in future too.

    Thanks for the answer.

So I can upgrade with the ISO and later create a Bootable USB Drive/DVD for a future clean installation.

  6. How you're going to upgrade with the ISO without creating a Bootable Disk of Windows Setup? I think , you will need to create the Bootable USB Disk/DVD from the iso to upgrade. Which you can save for future clean installation (if you want).

create the ISO and then double click the ISO, to mount it.. Run setup.exe to perform the upgrade..

If you copy the contents of the ISO to a USB stick, you will have bootable setup media on that USB Stick, thus you can do a clean installation. Or you can run setup.exe from the USB and upgrade

If you right-click the ISO you can Burn to DVD and have bootable DVD media..

You MUST upgrade first, to register the windows 10 activation.. After that you can perform a clean installation, but do not input any product key when asked, just Skip the key screens.. Windows 10 will re-activate without a key..

    What he/she said^^^^^^

    And @PaoloLib,

I urge you to either backup all your important stuff or create a disk image of your current Win7 installation prior to upgrade. It'll protect you against possible data loss.

That's true on the key thing just keep hitting the skip and set up will ask about three times to put it in but just skip it and it will activate when you get to the desktop.

I am thinking that you will need to do an upgrade to get the free windows 10. If when installing from an ISO if you do the clean install first it will not use your win 7 key to activate the install. Please let us know how it goes for you. *Smile

A detail: Windows 8 has a built-in utility to mount an ISO. 7 does not.

With 7, the options are: install a utility (freeware available) to mount the ISO, extract the ISO to a folder (7Zip works), or create a bootable medium. (To run an upgrade, don't boot from the device.)

I don't see this option in Windows 8, though i am sure it was available in one of my Windows 8.1 machine. Am i missing on something with settings on Windows 8?

  14. im gonna chime in here instead of making a new thread, as I couldnt find the proper "answer" to a question similar to the OP posted.

Will using the w10 media creation tool and using the "upgrade this PC" option, properly activate my w10 the same way as doing the free upgrade via "windows update" does?

Yes it will. It occasionally performs better too.

Don't forget to do an image backup first (or at least a backup of any important files)
