Let's get some basics out of the way.

    Scan UK built PC i7 4790k 4ghz GTX 970 4gb DDR3 32gb ram (originally 16 which I upgraded some time ago)

Have checked and updated drivers and ran a sfc/scannow which did show and fix errors.

I have two monitors, one at 1920x1080 and one at 1280x1024. Larger one set as primary before and after upgrade.

I've been happily running Win 8.1 Classic She'll for years but as several games I am interested in only support DX12, yesterday I took the plunge and used Media Creation Tool to upgrade to Win 10.

After some initial setup all things seemed reasonably well. Decided to install Forza Horizon 4 which took the best chunk of the day. Hit the first problem; resolution options were well under 1080p, with the largest available not even suitable for my small monitor.

After a few hours of trying to troubleshoot I uninstalled the thing, will do a fresh one when I can.

Then I noticed another problem. While games of all DX versions run the resolutions seem unchangeable.

I checked what games I already had that have a DX12 exe which I have a couple, F1 2019 being one of them.

Booted no issue, tabbed out to check something, tabbed back in, was forced to a window of a odd "Auto" resolution which cannot be changed. Game thinks it's still fullscreen.

After checking games that run in DX8,9,11 and 12 it appears that resolutions cannot be changed. There is no list. If it gets changed it cannot be reverted.

So bearing in mind this was 5am at that point and I am actually moving today, I gave up, and wrote up this to post on Reddit. Thing is, no matter the browser, I could not click a flair. Without a flair I couldn't post, so I'm retyping this on my tablet which is a painful process.

In short, I am an idiot for upgrading to Win 10, I knew I would have problems as tech seems to hate me. Win 8.1 Classic Shell has served me well and now I am in a mess.

I cannot revert as I deleted the old install information for space. Scan keep the CDs and was unwilling to help with the upgrade. As England is under lockdown taking it to a local shop is not an option.

So I'm at a loss. I'm not overly tech savvy, I've done all I know to do, and now I'm reaching out. Any assistance appreciated.

Resolution issue in Windows 10 after upgrading

    Hi Ravi,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community. I understand your issue and we certainly can help you

with it. We appreciate your interest in Windows 10.

Ensure that you have your drivers for the motherboard graphic display installed after upgrading to Windows 10. If you have internet connection try this step.

    • Press Windows logo + X
    • Select device manager
    • Right click on the touch display driver and select properties
    • Click on the drivers tab
    • Click update driver
    • Reboot the computer.
You can also download and install the drivers from your manufactures' website and run them in compatibility mode.

Check how to run programs in compatibilty mode.

Then you can apply this method to change the screen resolution.

    Method 1

Step 1: Right-click on desktop and then click Display settings to open the same.

Step 2: On the right-side, click the option titled Advanced display settings to view your current screen resolution and option to choose a different one.

Step 3: To change the current screen resolution, click on the drop-down box located under Resolution (see picture) to view all supported resolutions, and click on one of the listed resolutions to select it, and then click
    Apply button.

Do get back to us if you have any further queries. We'll be glad to assist you.

  3. Automatic resolution change for games

    Hi,

A corrupted data may cause an automatic resolution change for your games. Here are 2 methods on how to troubleshoot automatic resolution change for games:

Method 1: Here are steps on how to change hardware acceleration:

    1. Go to Start

    2. Click on Control Panel

    3. In control panel window, click on Appearance and Personalization

    4. Click on Personalization

    5. Select Display Settings, and then click Advanced Settings.

    6. Go to Troubleshoot tab, and then click Change Settings.

Note: Change Settings will be disabled if the graphics card drivers do not support disabling hardware acceleration.

    7. Move the Hardware Acceleration slider until it is one notch to the right of None. This is the basic acceleration setting.

    8. Click OK twice, and then close the window.

    Method 2:

Update the Video card drivers from the manufacturer’s website.
