Windows 10: Upgraded back To Windows 10. Same Slow Boot Issue

Hi guys, in my previous posts I had mentioned that I rolled back to Win 7 due to some issues mainly slow boot. I upgraded back today and the issue still remains. I have tried many of the fixes given online but with little success. In BIOS settings, i enabled legacy boot only, after which I observed that the black screen stayed for only 45 seconds compared to the earlier 1 minute, but the loading time to desktop from login screen was the same i.e. 1 minute. Compared to this Windows 7 loaded to desktop from OEM logo in just a minute. What exactly happens in between the windows logo, the black screen, the login screen and then to desktop? I understand that a clean install may fix it, but until i do that, i wish to explore other options to try and find out what makes it boot slow to this extent.

Extremely slow startup & wakeup

I have the exact same issue with Windows 10 on a HP DV7-4000. Very slow to wake from sleep, and slow boot. Why is Microsoft ignoring this?

Has anyone found a fix, or something that improves boot and wake speed?

 

Probably Windows is loading some applications in the background before showing your desktop and give you control of the computer. You can disable some non-important services and applications to try to make it faster. Then you could scan for malware which loads at startup consuming resources and delaying your computer.

To check startup services, press Win+R and at the Run prompt type msconfig. This will load System Configuration. Now go at Services tab and click the box to hide all Microsoft services. Examine carefully the remaining third-party services. Some are associated with devices such as graphics, audio etc. Leave these alone. Others can be from the antivirus. Look for update services. Disabling these you may not be able to update the application related, but it will speed up the computer. For example, you can disable Google update. If you want to update Chrome, enable it back or just download newer version and install on top to upgrade. After unchecking the box of some services, click Apply. Then you can also see the startup applications. Click on the Startup tab and then on Open Task Manager. Disable any non-important application. You certainly don't need iTunes loading at startup for example! If you want iTunes, just double-click the shortcut to load at any time. Restart your computer for changes to take effect and it should be a little faster.

Next step, check for malware and remove it. There are several free tools like Malwarebytes Antimalware and Spybot. You can use the free versions, no need to pay for Pro. When one finds many malwares, I usually use a second just to be sure. The second will always find some more that the first didn't detect. After cleaning all found malwares and restart your computer it should be a lot faster.

Next step , clean dust from motherboard, components and of course fans. Ask a professional to clean the thermal paste and put some fresh for better heat dissipation. When overheating the computer gets slower to avoid damage.

Last step, if your hard disk is over 50-60% full, then you may consider to defragment it. First I would run cleanup utility and delete any useless data. I would then defrag the disk to make as many files as possible continuous to save hard disk seek time. Defrag can take hours to complete for a large disk and it is not allowed on SSD. Use the trim function for SSD instead. Open This PC, right-click on the hard disk and select Properties, then Disk Cleanup. Check the box to remove any unwanted data. Once complete click on the Tools tab. Click Optimize, select your hard disk and then click Optimize again. It can take hours, so do it when you won't need the computer.

 

So far the boot Tim has improved by 10-15 secs...still slower than 7 though. I might attempt a reset. For resetting win10, since I made use of the upgrade offer, would I need installation media for the reset? Also is there any way to save a back up of my applications(not files) so that I can restore them after the reset/clean install? Also will a clean install delete my data drive too or just the windows drive?

 

Reset means that you return to a fresh Windows installation state. No applications, you have to reinstall them, not sure if your data are kept. So this is nothing you would do just to speed up your computer. It is reserved for when you have trouble booting into Windows. Clean-install = format, so yes, you delete all data and start from scratch!

 

Thanks! While resetting though I have heard that we need to insert installation media. Is that so or can I just proceed with it?

Reset Windows 10

 

Hi I have more or less the same issue although my screen is only black with the monitor NOT in standby mode for approx. 17 seconds, Windows 10 is already loaded and ready to go when the screen is returned to me.

This is what I think, messing with bios or Windows will have absolutely no affect, I've tried! I believe this to be a Bios/Graphics Driver issue. I have not seen Bios boot screen since switching to my GTX 970.

The issue reappears every time a game changes screen resolution... mainly the old stuff, I'm just living with it hoping it will be fix with an update.


System: i5 6600K, MB itx z170n wifi Bios F5, OcUK GeForce GTX 970, Corsair 16 GB

 

If this makes you feel any better, my PC takes time to load too. If I dare trying to open This PC or an application before it fully loads, it can get stuck and wait there for ages. The only workaround is to force shutdown or press the reset button. After it has fully loaded I have no problems. I think I'm going to check for malwares as I have already disabled most startup services and applications...

 

It seems all options to fix this have been exhausted. Guess a clean install is the way to go. Only hurdle would be getting back the programs installed by the tech guy on my PC . It may be that left over files from the Windows 7 installation may be causing the slow boot. MS' upgrades have never worked as advertised anyway...

 

If you can find all the applications you need, you could try installing them yourself to avoid paying the Tech guy. If you have any difficulties post here to help. Most free applications are just a Google search away.

I am not supposed to say that in this forum but you should know were to find them. All you need is uTorrent or any other client. Google search with the right keywords helps.
