My copy of Windows was originally purchased as Win7 Ultimate, then upgraded to Win10, and then upgraded to Win11.At no point did I link the install to a Microsoft account just had a local account on the machine.I recently swapped my motherboard, CPU, and RAM, and performed a fresh Win11 install from a newly made install media. Now I can't activate Windows because the activation dialog won't accept the legacy Win7 product key. And since the previous install wasn't linked to my MS account, I also can't recover the digital key with the 'I recently changed hardware' option.Customer service hasn't

    :)

Activating WIndows 10 after hardware change.

Before replacing my hardware on my main computer, I logged into my Microsoft Windows account. Once logged in, I saw that the name of the PC that I was upgrading was in my list of PCs that were activated for Windows 10 Pro. So after reviewing how to reactivate
after a HW changed, I went ahead and upgraded the motherboard, CPU and memory in that PC.

Now, when it is time to reactivate, the PC in question is still listed in the hardware list on my MS account but it will not allow me to activate Windows. I followed the instructions online and ran the troubleshooting tool. It then gave me the following
    response:

    Unable to activate Windows

We can’t find any devices linked to your Microsoft account that can be used for reactivating the device you’re using right now. Make sure you’re signed in with the same Microsoft account you linked to the
Windows 10 digital license on this device or try again later.

See other devices linked to your Microsoft account

So why would it not find the license that was for this PC when it had the old hardware installed? My assumption, albeit may wrong, was that the PC was activated because it was in the list. It was also activated as a Windows 10 Pro edition.

Anyone have any suggestions on this type of issue?

Activating Windows 10 Pro After a Hardware Upgrade!

I followed all the steps to linking my Windows 10 Pro to my Microsoft account so that I could upgrade my hardware, reinstall Windows 10 Pro, and activate it, but it's not working. I'm signed into my Microsoft account. I tried the activation troubleshooter,
selecing that I recently changed hardware, etc. Nothing is working. I can see my old computer under my Microsoft account, as well as my new one (with better hardware). I changed the motherboard, ram, and CPU. Any suggestions would be wonderful.

Activating Windows 11 after a hardware change

Thanks for reaching out! I'm an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft user like you.

Here is a step-by-step guide to help you reactivate your Windows 11:

    1. Check Activation Status:
      • Open Settings.
      • Go to System > Activation.
      • Ensure that your Windows is listed as activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account.
    2. Link Microsoft Account:
      • If your Microsoft account is not linked, you need to link it first.
      • In Settings, go to Accounts and ensure your Microsoft account is linked to your Windows.
    3. Run Activation Troubleshooter:
      • Go to Settings > System > Activation.
      • Click on Troubleshoot.
      • The troubleshooter will detect that Windows can't be activated on your device.
    4. Select Hardware Change Option:
      • In the troubleshooter, select I changed hardware on this device recently.
    5. Sign In to Microsoft Account:
      • Enter your Microsoft account credentials.
      • From the list of devices linked to your Microsoft account, select the checkbox next to This is the device I’m using right now.
      • If you don’t see your device, ensure you are signed in with the correct Microsoft account.
    6. Activate Windows:
      • Click Activate.
If you encounter issues where the edition does not match, it is likely because the digital license linked to your account is for Windows 10 Home, and you are now running Windows 11 Home. This mismatch can sometimes cause activation issues.

    • Edition Mismatch: If the troubleshooter indicates an edition mismatch, ensure that you are using the same edition of Windows that was originally linked to your digital license. In your case, both should be Home editions, so this should not be an issue.
    • Correct Microsoft Account: Double-check that you are using the same Microsoft account that was linked to your digital license.
Please do let me know if the method I suggested works for you or if you need further assistance.
