  1. Upgrading boot drive

My laptop died. But! I could salvage the ssd, so I figured I would use it for an upgrade of my boot drive in my desktop.

Unfortunately it seems my laptop ssd is configured with an MBR rather than GPT configuration, and for some reason the diskpart tool refuses to convert it. And seeing as I have a linux partition on the old laptop drive as well, that frankly I would like to keep, even though the data is backed up elsewhere, maybe that is for the best.

Becuase I also have another ssd that I figured I could use. a 250GB Samsung 850 evo ssd. However that ssd is configured with a sector size of 4KB, whereas my current windows drive has a sector size of 512B, so I cannot clone the drive (at least Macrium Reflect Free tells me as much).

And when I try to do a clean Windows install on the 250GB ssd I get an install error 0x8007025D. I do not know if it is the ssd or the usb drive I use as install media that might be the problem.

I fortunately do not often have to switch boot drives or move my OS, but that means I do not have much experience with this sort of thing. I have met more resistance than I was expecting, and do not know what the path of least resistance would be. But I have not reached the point of giving up yet. Any suggestions for what a good next step would be?

    Stuck in Windows 10 Upgrade

My computer seems to be stuck in a Windows 10 failed upgrade loop. I was running fine on a beta version of Windows 10, and then I came downstairs one morning to see it repeatedly booting, attempting to repair, then rebooting. The steps I've taken to diagnose are:

    • Attempting to boot off a USB drive (with all drives disabled in BIOS) - this fails at the point of the blue windows screen
    • Attempting to boot the machine itself and getting into "repair/safe mode" using F7
    • Looking at the BIOS for obvious failures (e.g. RAM that should be there is missing) - nothing obvious is wrong.

I am fairly certain the build version was 9926. For many months, the system would attempt to upgrade, and then say "it failed" for some reason and roll back.

    Suggestions for next steps?

    Can't boot from DVD drive

Is your controller in RAID/AHCI modes? If so, the DVD drive will be listed as a separate device in the list of available boot devices, not as "CDROM". Remember that when setting boot device priority. Otherwise, read the manual to see which hotkey during POST brings up the boot menu that lets you select which device to boot from. Even here, the drive will be listed separately, and not as "CDROM".
