Upgrading from win 7 (which has issues) to win 10

Hey guys, so somehow my windows 7 PC doesn't really work anymore, it keeps on crashing after a minute or two with the dreaded exception message (I suspect one of the automated system updates didn't install properly). I can login into the safe mode with networking and I have been able to use it.

I was thinking of upgrading to windows 10, however; it seems that I cannot upgrade while I am logged in safe mode. and my PC doesn't work if I am not in safe mode. What's the option for me?

It's a Dell PC, so I can do a factory restore, but it also means wiping out everything installed along with the data. What are the options? How do I upgrade?

    Thank you!

    :)

  2. Win 10 Free Upgrade then restored back to Win 7 now unable to upgrade to Win 10

I upgraded my system to Win10 using online free upgrade from Win 7.

Then I encountered issues with explorer in Win 10 so I restored back to Win 7.

Now it looks like this explorer issue has been fixed in Win 10 but when I click on Win 10 upgrade icon nothing is happening. How can I now again upgrade back to Win 10 from Win 7.

    Thanks,

    Anurag

Can I install Windows 10 on any other than default drive(C)

The time has not expired to upgrade from Win 7 ... to Win 10, but the OP wants to dual boot Win 7 / Win 10, which probably means buying Win 10 unless a second copy of Win 7 could be purchased, installed on a non C partition, and then upgraded, but even then
there's no guaranty that Win 10 won't still change the partition letter to C.

Again, in the case that you purchase Win 10, do a clean install (from dvd or usb) to a new partition, and although it changes it's partition to C, it won't affect the lettering for partitions as seen from Win 7. From Win 10, you may need to reletter the
non-OS partitions and/or the cd/dvd drive to make them consistent with Win 7. Do this before you install any applications to Win 10.

I would suggest that you fix the problem first before you even consider upgrading to Win 10.

Please go to Sevenforums and ask the experts to solve your problem.
Make sure you give precise full error message. Not just "dreaded exception message".

    Good luck.

  5. Welcome aboard, Dinesh.

Davidhk has given you good advice: Upgrading your problems will only bring your products to a new operating system.

But if your situation is hopeless, there are tutorials on how to do a clean install of Win 10 that will not bring your problems with it.

  6. I agree. Even if Windows 7 was working properly, some upgrades can cause issues. I wouldn't feel comfortable with a system that's unstable and then building on top of that.

If it was me, I'd back up my data (should be done regardless of which option), then wipe the system clean with the restore disc, putting 7 back on. Once that is complete, I'd upgrade to 10 to get the digital entitlement, then wipe the drive clean again for a clean install of Windows 10. It's a few hours of work, but it will leave you with the best possible system.

ok I think I will just do a factory restore. It's such a pain to re-install all the software that I have! but given that I have not been able to use my PC, maybe that's the best option.

I am thinking of partitioning my drives (right now there's just C*Smile. Once I do the win 7 restore, should I partition before I upgrade to windows 10? or after?

............ should I partition before I upgrade to windows 10? or after? .............
What do you plan to do with the new partition ?

Regardless of In-place Upgrade Install or Clean Install, you still need to install the Windows 10 over your Windows 7.

You cannot keep Win 7 in one partition, and install Win 10 in another partition, if that was in your mind.

hey NavyLCDR, that seems to be pretty easy. If I can run that from safe mode, then why not? I will buy an external HD today, and then backup my data, and should be off to the races!

After upgrading my old eMachine from Win 7 to 10 Home Premium all went well on my PC but my wife's exact same PC all goes well until it gets to installing the files and hangs at 10%. Yes, both PCs have a graphic chip that is not supposed to be supported, but I installed the correct driver updates on both. My PC upgraded okay, but now the other hags at 10% and will not go any further. I can just kick it off and it reboots to Win-7 and runs like nothing has been done. Maybe when M$ ever get their act together all the people having problem with their flimsy upgrade will have either died, changed to MAC or just given up on PCs.

I have upgraded an old eMAchine, a newer Dell laptop without much trouble, but this one just sites at 10% and that is all folks!!!! Anyone have suggestions?

  12. Dusty, upgrading to 10 with an unsupported graphics chip might not have been a great idea. But try this:

Find your video card in Device manager, and then work your way to the Events tab. Check the events to make sure that your driver installed completely. An unusual event when it doesn't, but it happened to me.

I took care of it before upgrading with new drivers. I had to use the ISO and new drivers.

Hey guys, so I was trying to do a clean install, via USB installation method.

    - First downloaded windows 10 64 ISO
    - Used rufus to create the bootable USB
    - restarted the PC, and then hit f12, got the boot menu
    - booted from the USB, but then immediately got an error about a corrupted driver iStorV.sys.

Does anyone have an idea what that error means? I would prefer to have a PC that works fine, without issues. I have backed up all the data, so can completely wipe out and do a brand new install.

    P.S I couldn't even do a factory restore.

So I have been toying with the idea of installing Linux Mint, instead of trying to install win 10. Has anyone done that? yay or nay?
