Windows 10: Upgrading PC with new CPU/Mobo/RAM. Have Windows 8.1 OEM disc and upgraded to Windows 10...

As the title says, I am currently on an i5 4690K and so I need to swap CPU + Mobo + RAM to upgrade to a 9700K.

I built my PC 6 years ago with a Windows 8.1 OEM disc and I upgraded to Windows 10 when the free update was available. I am going to have the same GPU and hard drives.

What happens when I swap the parts over? Also will I need a new license or can I transfer it somehow?

OEM Windows and MoBo upgrade

Okay, I've seen some posts with similar question as mine, but I couldnt get all the info I needed...

Here is the thing, I have an HP computer I've bought I few years ago. It came with OEM Windows 7 Home (I have the Product Key and the recovery discs), and I've upgraded my Windows to Windows 10 during the free upgrade period (also downloaded an ISO from Microsoft
during the update).

And now, I need to change my Motherboard (and only the Motherboard), cause my MoBo is outdated, it doesnt have any BIOS update or any support, so I cant even upgrade RAM if I need to. I Was hoping to
just remove my MoBo and put the new one, without even having to reinstall Windows (if possible), just connect my HDD and the other components and turn it on.

I have Windows 10 v1607 , and I linked my Windows 10 to my Microsoft Account through Settings > System & Security > Activation ( and now I can see my computer under Devices on my Microsoft Account).

So, is it possible to just change my MoBo, and activate my Microsoft? And can I install my new MoBo without having to reinstall Windows?

 

Windows 10 upgrade license

Hello guys,

I have 1 license of WIndows 8.1 FPP/retail license. I want to upgrade to WIndows 10, but I one thing is unclear to me.
If I upgrade, will WIndows 10 license be retail or it will "turn" into some sort of OEM license?

I ask this because I upgrade my PC, you know, more memory, replace HDD, and I intend to upgrade the MB and CPU to Kaby Lake platform sometime in the future, (and of course sell the replaced hardware)
This thing is not clearly mentioned anywhere.

windows 10 worth the upgrade?

Technically yes if it an OEM copy on your current PC. And you build a new PC you will have to buy a new copy of Windows 10.
But Ive done many board changes with an OEM copy and worse case I called MS and did the automated activation.
So that should work.
The OEM license does cover board changes as long as its the same board. You just have to call.


If your thinking about upgrading to Windows 10.
There have been some glitches that need to get worked out.
Have a back up or your original copy of windows, image, recovery partition in case it fails.
If your not prepared for a clean install then don't do the upgrade.
