Upgrading to release version from preview?

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I keep reading that the release version of W10 will update any W7 or W8 installation.
What happens with a Preview version? I am running it only now, and just wonder how that update will work. Do I have to go back to W8.1?

    :)

Upgrading from insider preview to release version

I've been using the insider preview for a few months now that was originally running windows 7. I see no way to upgrade to the release version of windows 10. Do I have to do a clean install or will I eventually get an upgrade notification?

  3. Upgrading from insider preview to release version

If you have been keeping up with the insider builds you shouldn't have to do anything. The last insider build (10240) is in fact the same one just just released to the public. If you click on Start and type: winver <Enter> you can see what build you are
    on.

I note that he didn't say it would activate beyond October though.

Also it's not clear whether not needing the key only applies to people who upgraded from 7 or 8 to 10 Preview (which therefore 'remembered' the original key somehow) as opposed to clean installing.

I can't make my mind up whether:
    • People who clean installed will need to enter a valid product key eventually or
    • People who clean installed Preview won't need a key, but Microsoft don't want to shout too loudly about this in case there's a big rush from people grabbing Preview as a freebie way to get 10 Pro.

That's what I'm kind of thinking too. If you originally upgraded from Windows 7 or Windows 8 to the TP, you'll be able to go to the RTM with out having to enter any key. Thus the "You'll be able to upgrade your W10 preview build to RTM and will not need your Win7 key." comment. Those that clean installed directly to the preview might have to provide a key though? Just guessing though.

  9. I've upgraded from Windows 7 to 10074 > 10122 > 10130 and the showkey utility shows the original Windows 7 key as the Original Key. It's stored in the registry somewhere. Same deal with my laptop, Windows 8.1 to 10074 > 10122 > 10130. Showkey shows my original OEM embedded 8.0 Core key as Original Key. The Installed key (the Windows 10 key) is different from the original key shown. The Preview keeps track of what keys have been used.

I have performed Clean reinstalls of 10 only.

So what should be my way to get the RTM?

  12. My advice is to just wait for more info. You may be able to just upgrade via Windows update just like you upgrade to a new build now.

Thanks for the good advice. There is a long time to go, and we definitely will get all the necessary information in detail at the right time.

  14. At this point there is so much speculation and rumors on the go that I'm having a really hard time keeping track of what's real and what's fiction. *Confused
