Windows 10: USB 2.0 ports / Motherboard Headers dont work

I hope someone can help please! A while ago my PC had all the fans on turbo once I switched it on. After that it went dead. IT people fixed it somehow. All the parts in my machine is the same but....USB 2.0 ports / Motherboard Headers dont work. I get this code : Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. Code 43 A request for the USB device descriptor failed.PC specs: MSI MPG Z390 Gaming Pro Carbon ACintel i9 9900kWin10I have done numerous updates, bios checks, cleared CMOS, read hundreds of forums but no luck! USB port stopped working

I had a USB2 port on the front panel that was working for a year but then one day it was not.

I uninstalled / installed the device via Control Panel for both of the USB Composite Device listings but it made no difference. I thought it may be a bad connection but everything looked OK. Both ports had power according to a USB digital voltmeter.

On the motherboard I moved the cable going to the front panel from one of the USB 2.0 Headers to the other Header & everything worked. At least for a couple months. Now the same port on the front panel does not work again.

So I uninstalled / installed both USB Composite Device listings but it made no difference. Under Properties it says they are working properly.

In Control Panel I did not touch the USB controllers for either USB 3.0 listing or for the USB Printing Support.

The port was working a few days ago but now it is not. The only thing that really happened lately was a Windows 10 Security Update that was installed on 10-27-2022. Could that have changed something?

Anything is possible but it seems strange that the same front panel port stopped working no matter which mobo header is used. Could one of my USB thumb drives be going bad & when plugged in is shorting out something on the motherboard?

Any ideas & suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Stupid Question - USB 2 Ports Into USB 3 Header?

So my old-ish case has 4 USB 2 ports in front. If I connected them to a USB 3 header on my motherboard, would they work? And if so, just at USB 2 speed right? I assume yes and yes, but I've only really worked with USB 2, and all I know is that all the plugs look the same, so I'm not familiar with these.

 

Possible to use USB 2.0 front panel ports on usb 3.0 motherboard header?

My motherboard the MSI X99A Godlike only has two usb 2.0 headers and I need more hookups as my case's front panel is taking both motherboard headers and my PSU has a usb connector header for the motherboard. Problem is now I'm out of plugs.

Choice A: Is to use an adapter to convert that 5-pin (has two grounds) header into a usb plug and connect it to the back of my case. Not really pretty but will work assuming I can find a 5 - pin cable! Not sure why most usb header blocks only utilize the first four?

Choice B: Get a usb 3.0 motherboard header adapter that will split it into two usb 2.0 male motherboard connectors and hook my case's front panel header wires to the usb 3.0 male header on the motherboard freeing up two ports on the motherboard. Not sure the implications of running usb 2.0 ports off of a usb 3.0 header in if the wiring is different or not?

The other wrinkle is that my motherboard will disable one of the usb 3.0 ports when MSI supercharger is enabled. So I'll have to give up that feature as my case has already one usb 3.0 front panel connector in use and the motherboard has two usb 3.0 headers. Anyone in the know please comment...
