  1. USB Blu-ray drive no longer visible in Windows 10

I have been using a Dell Inspiron 13 laptop for a couple of years now. It came with Windows 10.
I use a USB Samsung Blu-Ray writer for loading and archiving files. It has always worked on this system.
Today I came to write some files, and noticed that the device did not show in Explorer. I can hear it spin up when I connect it, and if I restart the computer with a bootable disc in the drive, the BIOS recognises it and gives me the option to boot from it.
If I check in Device Manager, I see an error "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)"
I've looked for this error on various forums. I tried the suggested fixes of disabling and uninstalling the device, then restarting. No change.
When I check the driver details in Properties, it shows two drivers:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\cdrom.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\PxHlpa64.sys

The first one is from MS, version 10.0.17134.1

The strange thing is that the second driver (version 3.01.01.0) is listed as being from "Corel Corporation". This is bizarre! I don't use any Corel software on this system, and since when have they written drivers for USB optical drives?

I suspect that something has been installed recently that has broken the driver. Using the optioms to reinstall or update it get me nowhere ("best driver is already installed"). The only software that has been installed since the drive last worked is a Dell OS Backup tool (which didn't work, and which I uninstalled prior to attempting the driver reinstall) and Adobe Elements 11, which surely can't be involved.

A USB stick in the same port is recognised, so I don't think it's a general USB drive problem, as has been reported elsewhere.

The next thing for me to try is a System Restore, but if anyone has a better solution, I'd be happy to hear it.

    :)

Blu Ray Media no longer detected

    Hello,

I upgraded to Windows 10 on several of my PCs from Windows 8 and 7. I have just realized (months after the upgrade), that no Blu Ray disks are readable with any of my PCs. I have tried the drives that came with the machines, and a USB combo drive that
can read Blu Rays, and none of them will detect Blu Ray discs when inserted. If I connect the USB drive to machines with Windows 7 and 8, and they read the media without a problem. I have tried several Blu Rays, and the same deal, on the W7 machine it works,
but not on my Windows 10 PCs.

All of the drives read DVDs, and CDs without an issue.

I have seen people suggest that you will need a third party application to read a Blu Ray, but if the drive does not recognize that a disk has been inserted, then no third party software will read the disk.

I have reached out to the hardware manufacturer, and they have instructed me to contact Microsoft support as they deem this to be a operating system issue, and not a hardware issue, since the drives all work before the upgrades. If I try looking for a new
driver, the Windows always denominates the drives as CD-Rom drives.

Can anyone help out with this issue?

Plug n play blu ray drive not visible on windows 10

    Hi Nyima,

    Thanks for the speedy response.

I have tried as you suggested and run a windows update but nothing appears to have changed.

I know that the software I'm using (TotalMedia Theatre 6) allows for playing blu rays as it is the same as I used on my previous PC so that shouldn't be the issue I hope!

When I used the software before it would always highlight the available drives where DVDs or blu rays can be played from. At the moment it only shows my D drive, but not the J drive I had the option to use.

The external drive is still not visible in windows explorer. I have tried: start menu / settings / devices / connected devices / add a device. But it still doesn't recognise the drive when searching for connected peripherals, though the drive does spin when
    I put a disc in.

    What's the next suggestion?

    Thanks again.

    Neil
