Windows 10: USB Card Reader keeps disconnecting

Dear Microsoft community,I have problem with couple of devices in my system.We are using Trust card reader, and in those card readers are placed government issued safety elements which are used by financial software.There is no set-up for this, and card reader uses generic Microsoft driver.Problem is this: every 8-10 hours card reader disconnects from computer, and I can't get it to work unless I restart computer.I tried using different USB ports, disabling power saving in device manager, reinstalling drivers and software, Windows update...Nothing seems to fix this problem. USB card reader keep disconnecting

I have a USB card reader that I use with a Micro SD card to record my favorite series from a DVB-T set-top box when at work so I can watch it later. While recording it works OK due probably to the low data rate required. The problem arises when I connect it to my computer to copy the video files. This is copying at full speed (about 19MB/sec) and has a problem with large video files. It hardly can finish the copy successfully. It is very likely that some time during the transfer the USB card reader will lose power and disconnect. The workaround is to attend the copy process and pause it for a few seconds at regular intervals until complete. When it fails I can disconnect and reconnect it and then click on "Try again", but this starts from the beginning of the file!

Before I throw it in the waste basket, I thought I'll give it a second chance. Is there any way to control the transfer speed so the card reader can cope with it and not disconnect? Is there a way to give more power to it, to give it priority, whatever? Any possible solution? I hate to attend the transfer and fear that it may fail at any time and have to start all over!

Hi Sam,

To isolate this concern, have you tried adding the card reader to folder as the source file in Photo app? If no, please add it by following the steps below:

• Open Photo app.
• Go to Settings.
• Click Add a folder under Sources.
• Choose the card reader folder.
• Click Add this folder to Pictures.

Once done, please check if you can now access the card reader photos.

Realtek USB 2.0 Card Reader


I've just upgraded to Windows 10 on my Dell laptop and I've been having problems with the Realtek card reader - see Realtek Card Reader Keeps Disappearing . You might find some tips in that link.

My card reader is listed under memory devices in Device Manager.
