  1. USB devices can only be configured when apps are in administrator mode

I'm not too sure how this issue started to occur. Some of my USB devices, such as my keyboard and mouse, will function correctly without any software open. However, if controlled by software, the software itself will not detect the USB devices plugged in.SteamVR fails to detect my Valve Index HMD, and Logitech fails to detect my Logitech keyboard and mouse. Could anybody point me in the right direction?

  3. Windows unable to configure the USB device

    Hello,

Thank you for posting your concern in Microsoft Community and welcome to the Windows 10 Family.

From the description provided, I understand that Windows is unable to configure driver for the USB device in your computer.

For a better clarity, let us know a few more details on the below questions.

    • What is the make and model of the computer you are using?
    • How did you upgrade to Windows 10? Was it through Windows update or using Media Creation Tool?
    • Did you refer to the manufacturer's website to check if there are any latest/up to date drivers for the USB device available for download?

(This is the best solution in context of the current situation)

I suggest you to follow the below methods and check if it helps to resolve the issue.

    Method 1

Perform these steps to run the Windows in built troubleshooter to identify any potential driver related issues present in your PC.

    a) Write Troubleshooting in the search box and hit enter.

    b) Click on Troubleshooting
    tab.

    c) Click on view all option on the upper left corner.

    d) Select the Hardware and Device
    option from the list.

    e) Click Next to run the Troubleshooter.

Note: Also run the Windows Update from the list, in case Windows is unable to download and install appropriate drivers through Windows update.

    Method 2

Next, check if updating/rolling back the USB driver helps to resolve the issue. Follow the below steps.

    • First of all, Press Windows logo + R from keyboard. It will open
      RUN.
    • Now type devmgmt.msc and press Enter to open Device Manager.
    • You will see all the driver list of your PC. Expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the
      Host Controller

    Update driver

Double click on the driver in Device Manager. Then Click on Driver tab
    and select Update.

Reference: Update drivers in Windows 10

    Rollback driver

Double click on the driver in Device Manager. Then Click on Driver tab
    and select Rollback.

Important: If your drive is performing well and there is no error, Rollback driver button will be grayed out as an option.

    Method 3

If it still doesn't help and if you have the Windows 7 drivers for the USB device, you may check if installing the drivers in
compatibility mode helps to resolve the issue.

Follow the steps to install the drivers in compatibility mode.

    1. Go to the location where you had saved your downloaded setup files of the drivers and right click, then select
    Properties.

    2. Select Compatibility Tab.

    3. Place a check mark next to Run this program in Compatibility mode
and select the Windows 7 operating system

accordingly from the drop down list.

    4. Let the driver to install and then check the functionality.

Hope the above information holds good. If you need further assistance, feel free to write to us again.

    Thank you.
