  1. USB Disk Drive not recognised - RESOLVED! Thank you

    Hi

I have two 1TB Toshiba USB Hard Drives. Both work on my old Dell laptop but only one works on my relatively new HP machine. Both are running Windows 10

It shows in Device Manager but not in Disk Management or System.

Clicking the USB eject icon on the taskbar displays an External USB 3.0 device but it does not have a drive letter associated with it. Selecting 'Eject' message displays the 'Safe to Remove' message.

I have tried:- using different ports, using a powered USB hub, updating the driver it was at the latest level removing a re-installing the device, re-booting the machine and performing a windows update

I have downloaded and run the Toshiba Storage Diagnostic Tool and that PASSED

I am stumped so any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you in advance

    :)

    • Press Windows key + X and click on
      Control Panel.

    • Select Troubleshooting.

    • Select View all on the top left corner.

I suggest you to check if the disk is listed in Disk management utility. If it is listed, run an error check to see if there are any corrupted files causing this issue.
    Refer these steps:

    • Press Windows key + X, select
      Disk management.

    • Right click on the drive and select properties.

    • Under tools tab, click on “Check” button under Error Check.

Follow the steps to uninstall the USB drivers:

    • In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers".

    • Right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".

    External hard drive not recognised

Thanks for this. I've done what you suggested and been through all the steps mentioned in the article. The hard drive works fine on a Mac computer, and I've managed to copy the information on it. It must be a Surface issue so I'll try to get a chat line tomorrow.
