Windows 10: Usb drive appears in disk management when no usb drive exists

    Usb drive appears in disk management when no usb drive exists


    In disk management I have disk 4 has removeable drive and the icons appears in desktop. I can eject this and the icon disappears & is removed from disk management but when I restart the PC the disk & icon re-appear although I have no usb sticks inserted in the machine.

    Toshiba External USB drives not showing in Explorer or Disk Management Plug-in

    I have two Toshiba 500 MByte removable USB disk drives. When I plug either of them into a USB socket on a Win 10 machine, they do not appear in Explorer or in the Disk Management plug in. No message appears about an unrecognised USB device. Other removable
    USB drives appear OK when plugged into in the same socket. The power lights come on on each drive but remain on continuously. When either Toshiba drive is plugged into a Win 7 machine, the power lights come on, then flash and the drives appear in Explorer.
    How can I make the drives appear on the Win 10 machine?

    In Device Manager on the Win 10 machine the USB-IF xHCI USB Host Controller has a yellow exclamation mark beside it and in Properties reports "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)".
    Clicking Update Driver Software and searching the Web reports that the best driver software is already installed.

    Do other USB devices work properly when plugged in to the same port...

    Do the drives appear in Disk Management, possibly without a drive letter ?

    In these cases it is helpful to anyone trying to help you to have your system specs available (TenForums User CP > My Settings > Edit System Spec) , plus a description of everything connected to the PC/Desktop (peripherals).

    The mystery drive could be a printer with a storage port, or even a USB hub. Windows 10 seems to have trouble with some USB devices if the drivers are not playing well with the OS.

    Does your computer or printer have a Card Reader? All card reader slots will show up as removable drives.
