Windows 10: USB Floppy drive not showing up on file explorer

I have had years of frustration with my USB floppy drives not showing up in windows explorer. I had been using the 'fast finger' technique to get it up in the half second or so after it is connected. Tonight I failed at that and out of frustration I typed A: in the search box and it came straight up. But now I see the floppy drive under this PC. Have they finally fixed the driver or did this always work?

Support for non-USB Floppy Drives in Windows 10

I have a 3.5" floppy drive with the traditional interface (floppy controller on the motherboard connected via a 34-conductor floppy cable). Windows 10 provides partial support for this: both the floppy drive and the floppy controller show up and are listed
as healthy in Device Manager, and I have access to the floppy drive in Command Prompt. However, I can't get the floppy drive to show up in File Explorer or Disk Management. How do I complete the support for my floppy drive?

I've found discussion in this forum and elsewhere on USB flopppy drives not being supported well in Windows 10, but this is not my question; I have the traditional interface.

 

Floppy drive not showing in Explorer Device Manager or Disk Management

I found among my stuff an USB Imation floppy disk drive and some floppy disks.

It showed up in File Explorer as Floppy Drive (A).

I was able to transfer a photo from a USB stick to a blank floppy and the photo was only 309 KB.

Properties say that I still have 1.08 MB of free space.

Note I did not have to install any thing and this is on an Insider build 19587.1000

 

File Explorer Not Showing External "A" Drive

I plugged an external "A" drive into my computer via a USB port with File Explorer open. The "A" drive shows up, but only for about 2 seconds and then it goes away. I changed USB ports and it does the same. I checked Device Manager under "Floppy Drives"
and it shows the "A" drive connected. Can anyone offer any suggestions on how to fix this? Thanks!!
