Windows 10: USB hard disk is getting disconnected and then reconnected with a high frequency

I am having a USB hard disk Toshiba this is getting connected and disconnected from the Windows 10 without any human intervention.

I sit on a table and chair and inserted the USB cable to my HP laptop.


Now after the hard disk is detected a small sound (some kind of notification sound from Windows plays) so I hear that sound loud.

I am copying the data and then suddenly after 5 seconds or so I hear same notification sound which comes when hardware is disconnected. Now in middle of some thing I don't do any thing here manually I again hear the same notification sound.

Like this within a minute I hear this notification sound 10 times or so each 3 seconds it disconnects and then reconnects.


This laptop hard a VMware workstation working on it so each time this will happen a popup from VMware comes up asking

you connected a external USB device what you want to do.

1) Connect to host

2) Connect to Virtual machine.


I shutdown all VMs running on this system but this problem did not go and for me it is literally unusable to use this USB hard disk.

What can I do?

AnthonyJose's post did provide a little help for me in the following manner:

Uninstalling the drivers and software associated with the USB hubs and allowing the system to re-installed DID help reduce the frequency of the disconnects.

NOW: I am only experiencing the USB disconnects and reconnects when I'm visiting MSN web pages or following a link from an MSN webpage. I experience what initially appears to be high internet latency, then
the USB devices disconnect and reconnect. After reconnection, the web browser/pages regain functionality. (Is there some snooping going on that I need to know about?)

These steps haven't eliminated the events, but have greatly reduced the frequency and have allowed me to start focusing on other troubleshooting efforts.

 

USB 3.0 randomly disconnecting and reconnecting, not power config

So I have a Surface Pro 3 running Windows 10, and an external USB 3 HDD. If I plug in the HDD, a process will begin. First the drive will appear with the drive letter only, and be unreadable, but in an unusual way. Any software that attempts to interact with it will hang until it either crashes or the drive is disconnected. During this stage the drive may disconnect and reconnect multiple times. If left in for long enough, the drive will finally show up with it's name, and be readable. However it still disconnects and reconnects.

Steps I have tried:

• Disabling the power saving features for all USB devices in Device Manager
  
• Reinstalling all USB drivers
  
• Testing hard disk on my desktop computer (where it works fine).
  
• Powering down the drive for an extended time before trying again

I suggest you to Change the USB power management settings and check.

  Open Device Manager.
  
• 
  Double-click the type USB to change power management settings.
  
• 
  Right-click the specific device you want, and then click
  Properties.

  On the Power Management tab, change the power management settings.
