Windows 10: USB mouse powers off/on constantly

Dear Microsoft,


Over the years, I have found the same issue reappearing. It would be nice if you could help to fix it. When a new release occurs, USB connected devices go offline/online periodically. So if you have a USB Mouse, particularly one that uses IR, then you will see it's light go off and the mouse disconnect.

It's happened many times over the years, so I dont think it's a hardware issue... MS seem to fix he problem (quietly), though I wonder.... why such a well known issue keeps reoccurring, and whether the ISO bodies should be reviewing Microsoft's practices as such.

USB mouse powers off/on constantly

I have two USB mice. Either of them, connected to any USB port, has the following problem:

The mouse powers off, then on, frequently. This does not happen to the USB keyboard I use.

System: Dell Studio XPS 9100 desktop PC

Windows 10 Home version 1709 OS Build 16299.125

Main mouse : HP USB 3 Button Optical Mouse

In the Device Manager, under Human Interface Devices, when I open the Mice and other point devices option I see two entries for "HID-compliant mouse", although only one mouse is connected. If I uninstall/delete one, it comes back.

I have disabled 'sleep' power settings for USB ports and the mouse. When I attempt to update drivers I am told that they are latest.

If I have device manager open and this power off/on occurs, the device manager list flickers (likely as it re-detects the mouse).

Please let me know any other means I can use to determine how to resolve this.

mouse is not working right


unfortunately there isn't a lot to a usb mouse. what i would suggest is checking the power management settings on it.

Right-click the start menu and choose device manager
Expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers at the very bottom
Double-click on each HUB you have listed, click Power Management Tab at the top, and UNCHECK "Allow this computer to turn off this device to save power"
You may have HUBs called Generic and Root Hub. Perform the step above on All of them.

If you continue to have the issue, i would imagine your mouse is malfunctioning. Perhaps try another mouse just to be sure. This will help you determine if it is in fact the mouse of computer causing the issue.
