USB Port Expander Questions, please ?

    Hi,

Not too sharp with this "stuff," so please bear with me a bit.
    Two questions, please:

    a. Those multi port USB Expanders, like Atolla, that Amazon sells:

Some have an "extra" Port for "fast charging".

Can this Port also be used safely like the 4 or 7 other regular Ports that most seem to have ? Caveats ?

    b. I have a program that communicates with a scanner radio that is driving me crazy regarding Port settings, etc.
Works just fine when the cable from the scanner to the W10 pc is plugged directly into the pc.
All the Port options that are free appear; just pick one and go. Works fine.

But if i plug it into one of my older Atolla port Expanders, and select a free port in Device Manager, it won't recognize it irrespective of which free Port i try to set it up with.

Is there anything that perhaps the Port Expander does not provide, that is provided by the the
    USB Port on the pc.

    Additional power connections, or...?

Any generalizations re Port Expanders in general; such as limitations,
what does/might not work (well) with them, etc. ?

BTW: just a bit more info.: I read, somewhere, that the scanner requires "some power" on the USB cable
going to the pc. Hence my question if I should try the :Fast Charging" Port ?

Worried about it being safe, and not blowing the scanner radio ??

    Thanks,
    Bob

    :)

    USB ports

    Hi Frank,

Inserting and removing a USB device repeatedly may cause the USB port to stop responding. When the port is in this state, it no longer recognizes any USB device, and the USB device will not work.

Here are few things that you can do to resolve the issue:

Use Device Manager to scan for hardware changes. After your computer scans for hardware changes, it might recognize the USB device that is connected to the USB port so that you can use the device.

To scan for hardware changes, follow these steps:

    • Click Start, and then click Run.

Note If you are running Windows Vista, click Start, and then use the Start Search box.
    • Type devmgmt.msc, and then click OK. Device Manager opens.
    • In Device Manager, click your computer so that it is highlighted.
    • Click Action, and then click Scan for hardware changes.
    • Check the USB device to see whether it is working.

Turn off Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

    • In the Device Manager dialog box, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers, right-click USB Root Hub, and then click Properties.
    • In the USB Root Hub Properties dialog box, click the Power Management tab. Uncheck the
Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
      box.

Let us know how it goes after performing the suggested troubleshooting steps.
