Windows 10: USB ports erratic or unresponsive after uprading to Win 10

I am running an ASUS P6X58D-E mobo and an i7-930 CPU. After upgrading from Win7 two weeks ago I cannot access any USB mass storage device, including my internal card reader as well as my Lexar USB 3.0 external card reader. My keyboard and mouse are okay.

I have tried all the suggestions on the M$ Community boards to no avail, i.e. uninstall USB devices in device manager, rebooting, etc. I've tried to search and follow some things on this board, like using the Intel Chip Driver (*.inf) fix, which failed, but, frankly, what i've been able to read is above my pay grade.

I even stopped by my local computer store and explained the situation but all they said was that they would be trying all the things I've been trying.

Does anyone have any suggestions or should I roll back to Win 7 so I can have a functional business computer?

USB not working

after upgrading to win 10, some of the usb ports do not work, usb port 3.0 works, but the other 3 usb ports 2.0, do not work.

You mean usb 3 port is backward compatible with usb 2 right? And my usb 2 printer should work in usb 3 port right? If I find vista driver in win 7 shoud it be work with win 10 64 bit? I will definitely reply you tomorrow after following your steps.

 

ASUS does not provide any driver/support for windows 10 upgrade for your motherboard. So there might be some issues.

One thing you may try. run windows update. If there is any compatible driver, that will be automatically configured after all the updates installed.

 

Thanks for replying, Arc. I've done all that now. Some ports are working, the ones built into the rig and connected directly to the mobo. My Rosewill internal card reader and my Lexar external card reader still won't respond correctly.

The internal card reader won't recognize the SD card at all. The external Lexar reader won't assign it a drive letter. If I go into computer management - disk management the SD card in the reader shows up as Disk 12 but with no drive letter assigned. If I try to assign it a drive letter the process just hangs until I pull the SD card out of the reader. At other times it will assign a drive letter but will deny me access saying a device is malfunctioning.

A few times I tried to Troubleshoot the Lexar from the Devices and Printers module. Once it worked, saying the device needed to be reset - which it did. I got access to the card, with an assigned drive letter and I could access the files. Most of the time, though, it says not accessible. If I try to eject the card I get an error message saying "An error occurred while ejecting...." and then there is a Japanese character instead of a drive letter.

I talked to Lexar and they are RMA'ing the reader because they can't figure it out either. That doesn't help the internal card reader, though. I have an email into Rosewill, but I am not hopeful.

Yeah, that older ASUS mobo may be an issue. I'll keep on struggling but any more suggestions would be great! Thanks.

 

The internal card reader will need specific driver for it.

The external card reader seems to be causing an issue at itself. Try with an alternative one and see how it goes.
