Windows 10: USB ports stopped functioning

My PC has been working properly for the past year. Two days ago, all but three of my USB ports stopped working. I received the Windows 10 notification, "Power Surge on the USB Port." Now, all USB ports are listed in Device Manager but only three work. Windows does not recognize any device that I plug into the nonfunctioning USB ports, to include a simple memory stick.

I have two USB 3.1 ports on the front of my case. One of those two stopped working. I find that very strange. The I/O attached to the motherboard has nine USB ports and one USB Type C. Only two of the USB ports on the I/O now work. I did not check the USB Type C. The two on the I/O that do work are not on the same row.

I doubt there has been any physical damage done to the motherboard. I hardly ever touch the PC. It sits behind a media console and never moves. I did not change USB devices recently. My PC is plugged into a Panamax M5400-PM surge protector/power conditioner. The Panamax is overkill for surge protection.

I have tried all software fixes I could think of:

1. uninstalled all USB drivers twice
2. clicked on "scan for hardware changes" in Device Manager for each listed USB
2. disabled USB selective suspend feature in Control Panel
3. unchecked "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" in Power Management in Device Manager
3. updated motherboard BIOS
4. updated Windows


Is this a software problem or a physical motherboard problem? I no longer have a clue. This is frustrating because I need three USB ports to use my PC mouse, keyboard, game controller. I now have to unplug something to use a USB memory stick. Thanks for any help!

USB 2.0 Ports Stopped working

Hello,

I recently noticed my USB 2.0 ports have stopped working, but my USB 3.0 port is functioning perfectly.

Steps i have tried:

- Restarting

- Searching for device changes in Device manager

- running troubleshooter

all these suggested fixes didn't remedy the issue, its a bit of an inconvenience that i only have one functioning USB port

To fully isolate where this problem is coming from, please answer the following:

• Have you tried connecting the peripheral devices to another computer to check if they will function?
• How old is the laptop?

We also suggest you run the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter
in Windows 10. Here are the steps:

• Press the Windows key on your keyboard.
• Type Troubleshooting then press Enter.
• On the left side, click View all.
• Select Hardware and Devices.
• Click Next and see if it will find any problems.

USB Port Oddities


Ok, let's see it with pictures step-by-step. First right-click on the USB device and select Update driver software:





Then select Browse my computer for driver software (LAST option) :





The select Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer (LAST option) :





Then select the standard driver from the list and click next:





Click next/OK as required to complete installation. Repeat the steps for all Intel USB devices. Finally click on each USB root device and press DEL to delete it, reply YES when asked. After deleting all USB root devices restart the computer.
