Windows 10: USB stick for System Image

I was just about to order a 256GB flash drive, when I took a look at the reviews. There are more than few complaints about them overheating, which causes (a) early total failure or (b) it disconnects before the end of a many-GB transfer. Sandisk seems to be one of the worst for heat, getting very hot to the touch. (Meanwhile, people who are only using them for playing music etc don't have complaints.) I'm posting this in Backups because I would get the drive for System Images only, and people here should have direct experience for that particular usage. Some complaints say that even doing 20GB of photos overheats, whereas I'd be at 250GB transfers or so. Are problems common or rare? Should I get an external HDD instead?

USB stick for System Image

My stick stayed at 33C through the whole 16GB backup. As for speeds, here's the data...










Just copied the backup I made on the USB stick to my desktop (860 EVO).
Speed held steady at 375 MB/s.

HOWEVER... I then copied the same 16GB backup file from the desktop TO the USB stick... and...
...the horror, the horror.







So it seems that backing up to the stick is fairly speedy, but just moving large files to the stick is... SLOW.

Thanks for replying to us with the status of your issue.

As you mentioned, when you connect the USB flash drive in to the system then the System image backup is not present. It might occur if the System image files is not created properly or may be it got corrupted.

As an initial steps I suggest you to check for the memory space in the USB flash driver.

If the Memory is occupied in the USB flash drive the I suggest you to try running check disk on USB flash drive and check if it helps.

Follow the below steps to perform Check Disk.

  Press Windows + X on your keyboard.
  
• 
  Select Command Prompt (Admin).
  
• 
  Type the below commands.
  
  Chkdsk [drive letter]: /f /r

Installing windows off of a USB stick

Step By Step from vista:
From admin cmd prompt

1. diskpart
1a. list disk
2. select disk 1 (replace 1 with your usb drive)
3. clean
4. create partition primary
5. select partition 1 (replace 1 with your usb drive)
6. active
7. format fs=fat32
8. assign
9. exit

Copy Windows Vista's DVD ROM content to the Flash Drive

xcopy d:\*.* /s/e/f e:\ (d being your vista cd and e being your usb stick)

And that's it, boot off your usb disk
