Windows 10: USB to SD Card reader not showing up

Hello,I have a USB to SD card reader for a memory stick from my camera. I am trying to connect it to my computer so I can download the media on it. I have a windows surface pro 7 laptop. Everytime I connect the USB through the port, nothing shows up on my computer. I have looked through file explorer but it does not show up anywhere. When I go to settings and connected devices the USB shows up there and it says it is connected, but I am unable to find it anywhere so I am unable to open it.I have tried restarting windows but it has not worked. Please help!!

Boot from SD card Reader?


It likely depends on what the BIOS thinks the device is? If it shows up like a USB thumb drive it should work. If it requires drivers to even be detected it won't.
I know I wish I could boot from the built in SD Card reader in my laptop but the BIOS does not even see it. It's not listed as a boot option even with a bootable SD card in it.

 

SD card/SD card reader no longer working

Right click Start > Device Manager > View > Show hidden devices > USB controllers > Realtek USB 2.0 Card Reader.
That is where mine is, only becomes unhidden with an SD Card in.

Not all SD cards have good contacts and/or the SD Reader contacts. I clean them with a small piece of card dampened with alcohol, IPA etc.

 

SD Card Readers not working

Hello Benital,

I have had this same problem and at first your suggestion worked (one time). After that, I never get the so called "action center notice". Even after a restart, with inserting the SD card into the built-in reader, once the OS is up and running for a couple
minutes.

I too have tried to upgrade the drivers, using my Dell computer's "Command | Update" function. But, to no success.

Question, within the Device Manager, how can I even find the SD card reader? I do not see it listed, but I do see a large number of USB devices. They show up as either "Generic USB Hub", "USB Composit Device" or "USB Root Hub", even several
"Intel 7 Series/C216 Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller". Which one would be my SD Card reader?
