Windows 10: USB Wifi Tethering not working anymore

So when I first got my pc I didn't have a wifi adapter so I just plugged my iPhone into the computer with the USB charger cable and was able to use the hotspot through USB to connect to the internet. Now when I plug in my phone; It brings up my phone, lets me access it, but I am unable to choose my phone on the list of available networks to access the wifi hotspot through usb tethering. I have tried everything from deleting and redownloading the network drivers to completely resetting my pc.

No internet access with wifi tethering (mobile hotspot)

I narrowed it down to the USB wifi adapter:
I tried tethering with a new Windows laptop (built in wifi module), it works fine.
But the same laptop does not work anymore if instead of the built-in wifi I use my TP-Link USB wifi adapter, TL-WN821N. (Same old problem: works fine when connected to the router, but when connected to the Android phone there's no internet.)

So it all points to the TP-Link adapter being the problem. I tried installing an older driver but it didn't help.
